What is left out of this discussion of transfers is the part that Rodgers had to play in them. Maybe the reason that our transfers look unsuccessful lies in the fact that Rodgers didn’t know how to use players he didn’t know from Swansea or Chelsea Youth.
Iago Aspas was a very good striker. Very good. Not OK or adequate. In La Liga he got 117 goals and 43 assists in 248 matches. Why didn’t Rodgers get more out of him?
Luis Alberto is an excellent central midfielder. Why didn’t we see anything of him at Liverpool? Rodgers did nothing to use or develop him.
Rodgers set himself against the club on transfers. The club brought in players like Aspas and Alberto whom Rodgers ignore, but who left the club to have excellent careers elsewhere. Meanwhile, when the club brought in Rodgers’s transfer choices, they were overpriced and mediocre at best.
So…maybe our problem wasn’t our transfers, but the manager who didn’t know how to use them or who didn’t want to.
