Neil was joined live up the City Tower by Gibbo and Ben Johnson for a cool, calm and collected discussion about Suarez, the FA, fireworks and Newcastle. May contain a swear.
Music this week from The Troubadours with ‘Where the Rain Falls’ and Dingus Khan with ‘Knifey Spoony’.

I know one of the Independent Panel. I used to work with Thura T Win. His day job is an IT Consultant. He was/is a bigwig in Portsmouth women’s football.
Don’t be daft! Suarez is a role model for all the right reasons!
Do you think that kids will copy biting?
Kids will look at how Suarez turns and takes defenders on.They’ll look at how he gets shots away in a single stride. They’ll look at how he controls the ball in an instant.
When I was a kid I wanted to perfect back-flicks like Ian St.John.I didn’t want to kick the centre-half like he did when he got sent off.
Behave yourselves!
it’s an mp3! YEEEEESSSSSS!!!!!!!!!
:-)
What a joyous listen that was – an absolute cert for “TAW: the greatest hits” double CD.
I haven’t listened to the broadcast yet, but the whole ‘role models’ thing is bullshit.
I ran a boys football team 10 years ago when my son was growing up, and I now have two daughters (8 and 11) playing for local teams. We watched the biting incident together than the first reaction, after the incredulity had passed, was to laugh. It was *that* absurd.
How do my TAW friends bring up their kids? I’m curious, because over the course of the last week I’ve heard legions of pundits and journos insisting that our beloved offspring are in fact borderline sociopaths primed to repeat whatever it is they happen to witness on our TV screens. The years of nurturing we’re investing in our kids are, apparently, a waste of time so long as it’s possible for them to see one footballer biting another on Sunday afternoon TV. Who knew?
Kids learn what is right from wrong by understanding that certain actions have consequences. They could witness a 1,000 footballers biting a thousand opponents every week and so long as those actions meet with punishment, the message about what is and isn’t permitted is still sent.
Falling back on the ‘role models’ argument is the last refuge of the shit parent. Or the desperate hack.
Brownie, I suggest you listen to the pod first.
I couldn’t understand what you were on about, thought I missed something out. But then I looked up and saw the headline of this podcast.
I must say, it’s the first time that I laughed so wholeheartedly since last Sunday. Thank you gentlemen!
Karen, sorry if it wasn’t clear. My comment was not written as a response to the pod; more just a random rant.
I’ve listened to the pod now and am happy to say I agree with every word. I’ve also read the report of the commission and despite the fact I obviously don’t share their conclusion about the length of suspension, it’s interesting to see just how much of the FA’s submission they discount. It adds further weight to the suspicion that the FA were hellbent on crucifying Suarez and chucked in any old bullshit they could think of.
Absolutely spot on!
It’s difficult not to have a pyro party when Mighty Red gets us all going so much.
There’s a really good track by Kings of Leon called Pyro. Just saying, like.
Run of games for Sturridge. Reminder for FSG to not have a summer which undermines our chances in the new season like last year. Kick up the arse for the team that they can’t just keep relying on Suarez like this season…
It’s not like there has been anything to play for in the run-in; worse things have happened if LFC react in the right way to this (yeah…me neither).
Just watched the Newcastle game and I’m very happy with the result, when Coutinino plays like this it just makes me smile. Very worried Carra is now contributing nothing to help with aerial balls thrown into defending areas. I worry about the Everton game, their players will single home out, I hope Rodgers goes with a back three.
Suarez is a wonderful player, probably the best I have ever seen in a long life of football-watching. He has everything; wonderful skills, great imagination, unbelievable persistence, and impressive aggression. I think he can do anything any of the ‘greáts’ could do, and more. But today, after the Newcastle game, I heard a pundit, one of those sages who knows everything about a game he has likely never played, say
“Now that Liverpool haver showed that they can play winning football without having to look up to see where Suarez is to give him the ball, they can have the good sense to get rid of him.”
There is, seemingly, no place in English football for a foreign genius who never tries to break someone’s leg, or punch them in the face. Who called a black man a Negro.
Luis Suarez seemed to be redeeming himself – we even got a penalty recently – and was maybe 5 games away from season’s end and newly-won respectability; but in one game he re-visited the heinous crimes that established his ‘cheating Dago beast’ reputation in the first; a blatant handball and a bite on an opponent. It set the reputation for all time.
I doubt that he is a quitter, but if I were Luis Suarez I would say to Liverpool that “…the bias against me, personally, is so bad that I need to move on. ”
We should let him go and then let the football world know in no uncertain terms that the people who administer the game in this country are entirely devoid of integrity and are, quite demonstrably, grotesquely xenophobic, if not racially biased.
And fuck David Cameron. I hope they lose all their Merseyside seats. Oh, …haven’t they???
Suarez punched a player in the throat in March when on international duty. It was disgusting behviour, not even close to being an accident. He looks to ensure the ref isn’t watching and them jabs the player in the neck. I’m surprised the trashing media hasn’t seen it yet. He also deliberately elbows their keepers as he comes out and spins away pretending nothing happened.
What puzzles me, is that if this Suarez biting incident is so dangerous for children to copy, why have the broadcasters shown and re shown this incident at every opportunity? Surely if our children are vunerable to such a sight the showing of the biting incident should only be shown after 9 oclock!
