This was one of those weird podcasts where I agreed with everyone on the substance but not necessarily on the sentiments. Rodgers did get it wrong, but early on it looked like we might have taken a hold of the match and there was potential to keep momentum. We faltered, badly, because of a combination of incorrect selections AND how our players approached that game. Impatient, frustrated, lacking in belief.
Another factor is that most of our supporters were looking at Southampton’s position on the table and not the nature of their losses or the quality in their side. Their front line in particular is patient, incisive, and intelligent. They knew our weaknesses and pulled us completely out of shape, creating a lot of channels and space to work within. That’s why we were missing Carra to a great extent and Lucas to a lesser one, not because either is an iron-clad stopper but because their positional sense and organizational discipline better counter intelligent attackers.
Mate, I like your positivity. I feel the same, in general. Not so much since Saturday admittedly. Just about to listen to the podcast but I’m amazed you say that early on it looked like we might take a hold of the game. It was a shambles from the opening minute. I text my mate at 3.10 on Saturday and said ‘this is gonna be 3-0. I could see it from the opening minutes.
I was referring specifically to the early Sturridge chance where we looked on the front foot (but that can sometimes be deceptive, eh?), but it wasn’t long after that when we turned shambolic.
Agree Robin.
just the ” body language” said it all. You have to wonder whether the players just could not get their heads around BR’s tactics. I assumed we would have a packed midfield with Sturridge as lone striker at least until we had the opposition sussed. I have yet to listen to the pod, as I am on the west coast of the ‘States and should be working. However, I like most supporters, just cannot figure out what happened. The spurs game was one that we got away with rather than played well in. Surely the manager and players did not look back on that and think we just have to show up. What galls me is that so many could see after the first ten minutes the folly of the selection but Brendan sat on his hands. Joe Allen has again been singled out by the more vitriolic supporters as the scapegoat, but in truth BR threw him under the bus by not making immediate changes. Sturridge is clearly not over whatever ails him, I hope he is not falling into the malaise that chelsea fans castigated him for. There was a definite arrogance there saturday. Watching Rafa’s tactical switches against the mancs last week, and Mourinhos the previous, point out to me at least that BR has a way to go yet before we become a commanding presence in the prem. Who would have thought that we would be seriously shackled without Carra in the back four. I wonder which “men” BR has in mind? I only hope they are not from Swansea.
I still think Rodgers stubborness is the reason he picked Allen before Henderson with Allen being ‘his player’. What’s happened to Glen Johnson this month? So mentally weak it’s embarrassing. 3 months ago I was saying how world class he is and how he was having his best season. He just seems so up and down. I hope his performance on Saturday wasn’t a result of the crowd being on his back. We need more.
Sturridge still has a lot to prove. Ok, last week when the blue noses were mocking his performance against Spurs I was telling them how much he’s improved us. This week I was left wondering if the reason big clubs get rid of him is because he’s not a good enough player.
The Spurs result yesterday could have had us all delirious but we hardly batted an eyelid. Very disappointed by Saturday. We’ve seen this arrogance everytime we’ve got a bit of momentum going.
For the week leading up to the game everybody was talking about the next 9 games and winning them all.
I got the feeling that we should have been focussing on the Southampton game and trying to play one game at a time.
But that’s where we are now and sadly I’m beginning to accept it.We’ve got a Manager who is learning as he goes along.Shifting this way and that as the situation demands.Trying to perpetuate a myth.
But realistically we are now also rans.It will take a long long time to return to our former glories.Certainly way beyond Rodgers and FSG time.
You just hope don’t you?How the hell did we finish up like this? One bad move after another.David Moores,Hicks and Gillette, Hodgson,FSG,Rodgers!
It’s beyond belief isn’t it?And yet there are loads of people insisting that we give them all time.Just like they did with Hodgson,Hicks and Gillette and now FSG and Rodgers.
I’m an eternal optimist. But as far as this lot goes I despair!
I talk to ManU supporters and try to discuss things as though we are still what we were. And they kind of accept it as though if they poke this sleeping giant it will wake up and terrorise them.
Oh! Dear me! If only!
An eternal optimist?
So stop starting from the point of what we were and accept the reality of what we are and where we need to get to. There comes a point when we need to stop dwelling on past glory, start getting behind the manager, and showing some patience in letting things play out.
For me, generally, the quality of football we’re playing has significantly improved – it certainly is more entertaining. But a change in style also exposes weaknesses we either didn’t know we had (Skrtel’s deficiencies come immediately to mind) or are inherent to an evolving style. Either way, these things take TIME to sort out.
You lament that BR is learning on the job. So what?!!! Do you think that Shanks and Paisley came in as the finished articles? The common rebuttal is that we “don’t have time” in the modern game to wait for a vision to come to fruition? According to who? Look at EVERY successful club currently playing and you’ll see owners who’ve stuck with managers and allowed them to learn on the job.
Have a look at Klopp at Dortmund, who came into a side consistently in the lower half of the table, got them up to sixth in his first season, and two years after that won the league. He certainly learned on the job and that club was in a VERY similar position as we are today.
Have some faith, friend. Relish the past but put it behind you and perhaps you’ll find the positives do actually outweigh the negatives for LFC.
Its telling that I haven’t seen the match but feel an extreme sense of deja vu – players waltzing through midfield to score ? Here we go again…
On the flip side, these last 9 games may be the last time Rodgers has room to experiment – so may be no point getting too het up.
It could be worse.
We could support Blackburn Rovers.
Sorry to be thick but where do I get hold of the 87/88 fanzine talked about on the podcast, ta
