This is the third in The Anfield Wrap’s series of free audio documentaries, TAW Moments In Time, bringing you eyewitness accounts of significant days in the history of Liverpool Football Club.
This time we travel back to the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, on May 12, 2001, for an FA Cup final between Liverpool and Arsenal which is often attributed to one man’s efforts alone.
Telling the story of that day are former Liverpool players Sander Westerveld, Stephane Henchoz, Jamie Carragher, Emile Heskey, Gary McAllister, Patrik Berger and (of course) Michael Owen; the assistant manager at the time, Phil Thompson; the referee on the day, Steve Dunn; journalists Chris Bascombe, Oliver Kay, Amy Lawrence and Clive Tyldesley; and supporters Gareth Roberts, Kevin Walsh and Dan Morgan.

Or part two, Everton 0 Liverpool 5 – November 6, 1982, here.
That was a great listen… it’s always interesting hearing ex players discussing games… the emotion in their voices tells you that winning finals means so much more than you realise, and for them while money they earn is important the ultimate reward is victory and lifting a trophy
Fantastic listen. The Kenny and Mersey Derby stories were both excellent but this one tops even those….John Gibbons keeps on delivering. I remember being stunned at how we were still in the game as it went on and when Ljungberg scores definitely thought that was it. Definitely seems to be some ambivalence towards Owen but that second goal was up there with the very best strikers goals. A great day, brilliantly remembered in a great podcast.
Top work Gibbo and team!!
Ah, great work by Gibbo and the team.
I nearly drowned because of Michael Owen and this match. I was on holiday in Greece with my wife and kids – I was watching the game in the hotel bar, the family were out by the pool – the kids were learning to swim at the time.
I was a few pints in when Ljunberg scored, after which a few Gunners fans rocked over to give me a hard time. When Owen scored his first, I made a show of myself, ran out of the bar, did a lap of the pool, past the wife and kids and everyone else, wildly celebrating, then back in to join my ‘pals’ for what I thought would be for extra time.
Minutes later, after he scored AGAIN, off I went out the door again, spotted my kids in the pool and belly flopped in to join them. I never noticed though that they had armbands on and they were now in the deep end of the pool…… and I can’t swim. I eventually got pulled out by a Finnish grandad who was there with his family on holiday.
I spent the next few minutes elated, nearly dead, chucking up water and beer by the side of the pool, being stared at by my kids and a red faced very very angry wife. Happy Days.
Three days later, still on holiday – Alaves. We went to a different hotel. They had a pool too …… :)
