I had thought before kick off that an early goal is exactly what we needed. Quieten the crowd and kill their hope.
Actually, it arguably worked against us. We drifted through the game from then on rather like a training session and were unable to lift ourselves when it mattered.
That said, we obviously shouldn’t have thrown away a two-goal lead so late. It shouldn’t damage morale before Tuesday too much. But it is bloody annoying…
Loris Karius: 7
We never looked particularly comfortable from set pieces all game and Karius was part of that. But makes a great interception when Ragnar Klavan was sleeping and is really unlucky for the first after making a smart save. Gets himself in a weird position for the second but not sure it mattered.
Joe Gomez: 4
Those of us who were hoping Joe might have a big part to play between now and the end of the season will be disappointed by what we saw. Very lazy on the buildup to the second, although might have just been shattered. Presumably will get another go next week against Stoke and will hopefully be sharper.
Alberto Moreno: 4
Way off the pace. And normally he’s at least up with play. No threat at all going forward either.
Ragnar Klavan: 5
I watched the game in The Golden Eagle in Chester for slightly complicated reasons involving Record Store Day. The talk in The Eagle is Ragnar looks like a fella round the corner who will put any car through it’s MOT for a £50 dropsy. It looked like they might have swapped places a couple of times today.
Virgil van Djik: 6
Won some big headers but have seen him have better days.
Jordan Henderson: 5
Like many of them, he seemed to be playing well within himself. But as captain and a key position on the field I’d have liked to have seen more from him when necessary. Not sure Jordan is one who can have an effective quiet game.
Gini Wjinaldum: 5
Surely the one to drop out Tuesday. Is a but unlucky to get a duff ball from Roberto Firmino on a rare run forward at 2-1.
James Milner: 6
The most eye catching of the midfielders. At least kicked them a bit.
Sadio Mane: 7
He’s terrific for the opener and a general danger until he went off. Looks to be getting in form at a lovely time.
Mo Salah: 7
He’s got the dink down now, hasn’t he? Not at his ridiculous best apart from that, but still terrifies defenders. Not enough is made about his touch. Let’s all meet on Tuesday afternoon and have a big chat about Mo’s touch.
Danny Ings: 7
Looked absolutely made up to score, didn’t he? Should probably add a second first half. It’s a good save but he has a lot of the goal to put it in. God knows how he doesn’t get a penalty start of the second and then gets punched in the chest to boot. Shame he had to go off but sports science init.

Made a decent case to still be considered a front-three player if needed. Lovely assist for Mo.

Even against relegation fodder Moreno struggled. Hence the yellow. When Moreno plays, a draw or loss is always a distinct possibility.

In a game where the players needed protecting before a cl semi the ref allowed West Brom to kick lumps out of any player in red and considered the chopping down of Ings a shoulder barge, where any LFC defenders breathing on an opponent seems to be enough for a free kick. Do a different set of rules apply because it is West Brom? Mo got smacked in the mouth and Danny punched in the chest and nothing was given. We were disjointed but got ourselves 2-0 up before having too many players not match fit losing concentration at the end. 3 changes at the back ment we had no fluency

Can we just give the ref -100 as well? Whatever we did wrong West Brom should have been down to ten men long before they pulled one back. It’s one of those days where you wish VAR could have spotted something- like a pen for Ings maybe.
If you play three defenders who’ve had little recent game time expect the defence to be a little off its game, it’s as simple as that. I love Klopp to bits but did he really expect the defence he put out to be as sharp as was going to be needed? Also, why is standing an opposition player right in front of a keeper suddenly not obstruction? Surely blocking the movement of a keeper is the very definition of obstruction. Come FA, sort it out.
I think Klopp needs a rating as well – I’d certainly mark him down for not learning a lesson from the start of the season: changing our defence mid game makes it weaker not stronger. Sure, if it is a Spurs situation then you can pull out the weak link but when we are winning and generally looking okay then adding an extra defender and switching the formation, particularly with a line-up not used to playing together, is asking for trouble.
