The Post Match Show after Sevilla sees Liverpool with more questions than answers yet again as they showed a dreadful lack of ruthlessness and didn’t see the game out at either end of the pitch.
Neil Atkinson is joined by Ben Johnson, Steve Graves and Krish Bhautoo to discuss the game.
Ben jonno’s comments about relying on shape because as soon as we rely on the individuals at the back to get us out the shit we’re fucked are spot on.
I get what yas are saying about being profligate in the final third but cmon guys if it wasn’t for shambolic defending we win this comfortably.
We’re currently conceding just under 2 goals a game on average , which means we need to score 3 goals every game just to win.
That’s ridiculous!
This was really good. Now that the discussion around the costs/benefits of the system is gaining traction, the question for me is, would playing with an experienced, excellent proper DM be easier than playing with “the system”. Our system just seems to depend too much on the perfect players having perfect moments and having perfect concentration all the time… Other than the apparent impossibility of buying the perfect players, too often it’s the concentration and individual errors that cost the team. At what point do the costs of the system outweigh its benefits? I think our next three matches are going to test the system and the players to the limit and I’m dreading the outcome.
Really good discussion about Coutinho and Milner re the midfield as well. I think we’ll see an improvement when Coutinho comes back into the team, because they probably did all their drills and exercises with him central to the system in preseason. I also think Milner’s organizing is a loss. There was a moment last season when the camera cut to him signalling to Mignolet when the outfield players were in position so that he can do his goal kick and I’ve not been able to forget it (and what it meant about Migs’ decision making). I don’t know how much talking Milner did on the field but something’s missing with him off it.
