Thank you for the avalanche of deadline day podcasts. I’m sure they were soul-destroying to do but they were great fun to listen to–kept me going 10 miles on an elliptical just catching up on the madness.
I’m not disappointed on the whole. I would have loved to see both VVD and Lemar, and we really do need VVD, but we made some very important deals this window. Keita is an unadulterated coup, Salah solves a problem we had (Mane’s absence) and strengthens us significantly, Solanke is exciting and a triumph over Chelsea, AOC is the window’s ‘Wijnaldum’ and a triumph over Chelsea who strengthens our midfield, Robertson looks good and solves a problem at leftback, Gomez isn’t new but is emerging as a solution at rightback and a replacement at centreback, and we kept Coutinho, which keeps our midfield strong, though putting him together again psychologically will not be a trivial matter. Will Can sign a new contract? That’s the next question, but if he doesn’t I won’t cry because I am hearing that he wants security in position or a salary that will inspire complacency and Can strikes me as one you have to keep hungry. So whatever. I can’t wait for our next game. Up the Reds!
It should be mentioned, too, that LFC did a great job on outgoings and loans. That Origi loan is highway robbery, and we’re the robbers for once. I don’t think we can complain too much about Sakho’s fee; he hasn’t featured regularly for a year, he has disciplinary problems, he’s quite injury-prone—we got about as much for him as we could expect. He’s a talented defender and a good-hearted human being and I wish him well, but his time at Liverpool was well and truly over.
To say that ‘we’ or ‘the club’ didn’t buy a defender evades the reason: Klopp didn’t want any other defenders. Should the owners just go buy some defenders and present them to Klopp and tell him to play them? Um, Sakho.
This transfer window was disappointing from the standpoint of not having anyone other than fucking VVD to compete with Lovren.
Lovren has a mistake in him nearly every game, and with the wrong pairing he is disastrous. VVD I think is overrated in my opinion, but it baffles me that no other CB is available to. All eggs in VVD’s basket then Let’s hope Klopp doesn’t make an omelette of it by next transfer window as we will know by then how LFC shape up against the big boys in the CL and EPL.
I am really excited to see Ox, Solanke, Salah and Robertson play and wish them well at LFC. If tomorrow there are no surprises then Coutinho is still a Red and hope Lallana comes back soon.
Not sure about Keita – too far ahead, best to leave it to Klopp to figure it out then.

2/4 targets secured, 1 more coming in next year, kept Phil. Not too shabby. Obviously would have loved to see VVD and also wish Klopp would have identified Davidson Sánchez as a CB target before he went to Spurs.
Buying Robertson frees up Milner, and between Milner and The Ox, we have good rotation through the middle of the field. The Ox, Solanke, and Studge means we have flexibility up front along with Bobby, Mané, and Salah.
Klopp is going to have to get the best out of Gomez and Trent as well as Lovren and the keeper situation. We still have defensive questions, but overall I’m still pretty excited about our transfer window.
“Loads of boss toys but forgot the batteries” is perfect. I’m just saying that I’m still pretty stoked on the toys, we can always go back and buy batteries later.
Great shows lads well done, Taw getting better and better. In years to come we will look back on this window as when Liverpool became a world football power again, We did not get a CB, but VVD is not going anywhere but Anfield and Arsenal offered 92 Mil to Monaco and Lamar said no thanks its L4 or nothing. Chelsea were Oxbowed and we have a 150 mil player either to reintegrate or sell and with Nabby on the way I don’t care because it’s nice to support the hottest club in world football
Then Why not buy Lemar, quibbling over £20 M in this market when got money to burn, left it so late, not good enough. I was surprised Monaco accepted a bid not short of cash and considering amount of players they lost. Citeh showed how to do it got in early and got it done with Silva and Mendy
I think our interest in Lemar was late because it was part of the chain reaction from Neymar’s move that only happened mid-window. At the opening of the window, when City got all of their business with Monaco done, Barca still had Neymar and were not making overtures to Coutinho. The unsettling of Phil began only in early August, after Monaco had drawn a line under their transfers out. FSG were committed to keeping Phil and probably never got as serious about Lemar as twitter thought they were; Lemar was more a target of opportunity than a ‘must-have’, and when Monaco hiked the price up to 100mil, it just didn’t make sense anymore with Phil still at Liverpool.

I’ve been thinking about the VVD situation, now that I’ve had a sleep and a period of no mad transfer rumours to clear my head. People are saying we should have moved to an alternative target, but who would that be, truly? And what would have been the consequences of shifting away from VVD? Here is my understanding of that alternate reality:
1. Liverpool stops staring longingly at VVD and waiting for a competitor (Man City is the strongest of them) to bid.
2. Man City and Pep Guardiola jump in and bid for VVD, now that Liverpool have committed to a different defender (not Howedes, who said he turned us down, the nob).
3. VVD wipes a tear for Liverpool from his eye with his huge new contract from Man City and takes Pep’s well-manicured hand and is off to the Etihad.
4. I wake up this morning to a world where VVD is at Man City and Jonny Evans is Liverpool’s new defender.
5. The ball of fire coming out of everyone’s phone is the Liverpool Twitterverse, raging at the very alternate reality that they had screamed for all transfer window.
I prefer this reality.
I’m certainly buoyed by the fantastic results over the last two weeks. Shows that we have a very good side indeed. I think we’ve added much needed depth in this window and our bench will now look formidable. Of the new chaps, only Mo Salah, in my opinion, is a first 11 starter, so we haven’t improved the starting 11 drastically. We haven’t improved where we needed to – Center Back! I personally think it’s negligent that we do not want to replace Lovren (note: we haven’t even bid for VVD or any other CB for that matter!). In this window LFC have net spent about £50 mil compared to the Manchester clubs with both net spend approximately £130 mil. It’s frustrating that we haven’t strengthened where it was most needed (in defense), however let me finish on a positive note. Klopp has proven that he can turn water into wine! So I trust him 100%. I will be behind my team 100%. YNWA.
Net spend is a dubious metric because it punishes the club for getting high prices on outgoings. Unless you are unwillingly selling one of your best players in the window, you want a net spend as low as possible, so there is more money to buy desirable players in the future. We could never have dreamed of spending 75mil on one player (VVD or Lemar) if we hadn’t been wise about buying lesser players for less and selling lesser players for more (Ibe for 15mil ffs!). If we sell well, as we have for the past two summer windows, we have more money for our highest priorities.
