Good show fellas. Although Coutinho is clearly not in good form there are some mitigating factors which weren’t mentioned. One of the worst aspects of our play when we come up against these compact, physical sides is the lack of movement once the preferred spaces are occupied by defenders and this hampers Coutinho more than anyone. Time and again he receives the ball, swivels and looks up and everyone’s just hanging around expecting him to make something happen; his only options therefore are to pull off a ridiculous creative pass or dribble through a dense jungle of legs in a few yards. Coutinho is an absolute magician of a footballer with showtime ball skills but he doesn’t have great pace or strength – he needs teammates to play with him. A comparable scenario for me is David Silva at city. A cream footballer that doesn’t have the physical attributes to match his technique. They can both be bullied in scrappy games and go quiet, but as long as players around them are prepared to move, they will take over the choreography.
For the record, Woodburn came on at 1-1 which makes it more significant.
