Thank you for your continued featuring of Hillsborough…I left the UK for the USA about 6 weeks after Hillsborough and discussion of the “accepted” culture of that time is always important…reminder of how much has, actually (despite Trump/brexit) changed for the better…
if you left the UK in 1989, you probably have absolutely no idea what the European Union is, or does.
There is so much hyperbole around this keeper. Hes been bad yes, but compared to other players in the recent games the amount of attention he has got is way out of proportion to what he has actually done wrong in the context of the team performance, to the point where fans are writing his career off for Liverpool after 10 appearances. Carragher talking about De Gea being 20 and Karius being 24 dosn’t help. Its not even correct. De Gea turned 21 a few months after joining Utd and had a poor first season and Karius is 23 and was 22 when we signed him.
He has been really bad though. I’m sure he has the potential to be a good keeper if he gets his head sorted but he is shitting himself any time the ball comes near him. I reckon his goals conceded to shots on target ratio has to be one of the highest out of almost any keeper in the league, ever. I get what was said about him allowing us to push up the pitch, as I agree that with Mingolet we susceptible to a high press (see Burnley), but he has to be stop some shots that aren’t just hit straight at him.
I also don’t get this “accepted wisdom” that Neil and Andy have been going on about when it comes to not dropping keepers because increases the fear of making mistakes. One, because I actually though Mingolet played his best games at the start of the season when he was fighting for his place. Two, Karius could hardly be more fearful. I know I keep harping on about this but get him out of the limelight, put him back in the cup games and u23s to get some confidence and remember how to save the ball.
Absolute rubbish. Karius had good games against Watford and Sunderland. Also, apart from a mistake against Bournemouth, his kicking and distribution were excellent (also the case versus West Ham). It’s not wonder his confidence is taking a battering when so-called ‘fans’ both within Anfield and on social media are lambasting the guy at every opportunity.
Another great documentary by Peter.
One thing I took from it is how lucky we are as a society to have people like Peter, and others, who who are prepared to devote so much of their lives searching for the truth.
The documentary made me so angry I felt like exploding but it’s an anger born out of frustration. I grew up thinking how lucky we are to live in a country like Britain where the justice system and values of fairness, democracy and liberty were so rigidly adhered to. That was shattered a long time ago, admittedly but you can see how the belief carries. In some country’s corruption is very open but here it seems so cleverly concealed in layer upon layer of deceit. How some people are managing to get to the bottom of it amazes me and I’m in awe of their tenacity.
My question though, which I’m not looking for an answer to on here, would be can the IPCC be trusted? The last 27 years have left me very cynical. Billy Bragg once told me that cynicism was one of the worst things you could be. I never really understood what he meant till recently and seeing what all these people have achieved fighting for truth and justice.
Hey there friends,
So during this massive, apparently ever-growing goalkeeper controversy, I have not once heard the name Danny Ward mentioned… Last season he was doing so great in Scotland, and everyone said he was such a great talent. Well, given Karius and Mignolet will arguably always be Karius and Mignolet, why not let the bright young talent have a shot in the first team???
Just wanted to say a couple things as well- like start with the goalie like everyone else. I never thought Mingolet deserved to be dropped based on his performance this season, and honestly Karius has done nothing to suggest he is a better goalie. I’m like Gibbons in that I’m just mad this guy is going to cost us the league; imo Mingolet has proven he is capable enough of getting us far- we finished 2nd in 2013 with him and for all his errors he made some great stops that year. As for the overall team the last 2 weeks, I don’t think we’ve been too bad; if you score 5 goals across 2 games, surely 1 point is about as low a total as you’re gonna get. And lastly this flows to the Origi conversation; not only is he scoring goals but the team is scoring a lot as well. If we had a better lad in goal, I really doubt we would be dismissing the impact origi is having- he is slotting them in every week. Anyway I’m trying to stay positive and as long as we are no further than 6 from Chelsea at Christmas, I think we’ll be okay. Up the reds

Mignolet is mid to lower table standard. Always was and is. Karius? Klopp knows what he bought but we are not seeing it. Is it possible his broken hand has affected him and his subconscious is instinctively holding him back from repeating the damage? We all know it can take a season or more for the body to forget bad injuries as our bodies have inherent self-preservation instincts. Hope it’s that and it goes because if we’ve little faith in him – the team must have absolutely zero – and that makes everyone’s job harder. It breaks down this system we have BASED on confidence to control games. I don’t mind shipping excellent goals- but some of these are taking the mick. Between that and short of a consistently good CB partnership – there could be trouble ahead.
Further upfield- it’s not great balls of fire but we scored 5 in 2 games missing key forwards in each so I wouldn’t panic.
Origi played his best support forward play so far and was excellently synced with Mane so that’s a good sign.
Gotta take Middlesbrough.
So on keeper-cast today, how come nobody is going back to Klopp’s reasoning for not buying a left-back ?
“Why does everyone think the answer is another £25m player and not work on the training ground?”
Could it be that Karius is no.1 while Mignolet has been told he has to work on x, y and z in training, and that at some point, if Mignolet delivers, it’ll switch and Karius will be told he has to work on a,b and c?
Moreno has come in for the odd game and it’s been commented on that he has improved since he was out of the side……so work on the training ground perhaps improving him?
Maybe I’m clutching at straws……But it can’t have escaped all the coaches that we need to improve our goalkeeper position somehoworother?!
Great show lads. The comment that the free kick set up is poor and that the buck here stops with Achterberg cannot be understated. As a GK coach I spend 30 minutes twice a week on setting up a wall, line of sight, and positioning. Seeing Karius’s starting position was a strange experience as it was wrong on so many levels. He’s obviously challenging Payet into placing the ball into an area that Karius chooses: however he can still achieve this by stepping two feet to his right and he is still invulnerable to his left. The fact that he would never have got close to the ball if Payet had even passed it with a weak-ish shot placed close to the post begs the question – what on earth is the thinking there? He gets his hand on it but that’s only beaucse it’s one of Payet’s poorer efforts.
It reminds me of an almost carbon copy Mignolet effort last season – again, way too far one side, leaving too much work to do once the ball is placed where the goalkeeper has expected it would be placed.
This can only come from the coach. I’d be very suprised indeed if Karius was setting up his walls in Mainz the same way. I’d be very interested if anybody has any information on this.
Finally his footwork across the goal is laboured. There aren’t too many things a coach can do with a keeper – he can’t save the ball for him in a game…but clean, crisp, decisive footwork is meat and drink for any pro keeper.
Look the point has been made that none of us know how good or bad JA is at his job. He can’t be atrocious. But those ‘two percenters’ that separate also-rans from champions in any sport are piling up here in this department. If you look at our first goal, and how many Liverpool players had to be absolutely perfect in their execution of passes, movement, lay-offs, flicks, control and finishing – to score one goal – and then fast-forward to how easy it was for one of their blokes to pass a ball into one side of a mostly unguarded net with just one shot from the dead ball, you see how this situation must be doing the players’ heads in.
However the other point that Karius allows us to play further up the pitch than the Ming is also undoubtedly true. He also did well to dominate Carroll late on and cleaned him out with a challenge quite far out of his six-yard area – and that was after his poor keeping for the two goals, so that showed character.
If we can get Karius stopping shots he should be stopping then things can be rosy again and we could have the keeper we want. But am still not convinced by Achterberg and have been saying so for almost a year so am not jumping on any wagon.
A bit belated but can I say how much I enjoyed that podcast. Really intelligent discussion and so many good points made by everyone.
For my part I had resigned myself to Karius holding on to the goalkeeper position. Am really glad he has brought Mignolet back – that’s something I thought i would never ever say.
