THE match ratings from Liverpool’s collapse at Bournemouth.
Loris Karius: 2
Off the back of a few clean sheets, looked to be settling and then that? Awful.
Should be making at least two of the goals, the last one being the worst, handling not great at all.
Only saved from getting zero for a good one-on-one against Benik Afobe and a couple of good punches.
Nathaniel Clyne: 5
Great cross for an early Divock Origi miss, not particularly at fault for any of the goals but didn’t stand out either.
Needs to practice his shooting, and all.
Dejan Lovren: 3
You’re 2-0, cruising, everything is sound.
Great, yeah? Don’t give the opposition a chance by trying to be a smart arse, mate.
The capitulation started and ended with Lovren deciding to regress back to 2013.
All over the place when we needed someone to take the lead.
Lucas Leiva: 4
Great in possession but isn’t a centre-half leader, probably look good playing with Joel Matip but no cohesion with Lovren at all.
James Milner: 5
Gave away the penalty which gave the hosts a glimmer of hope but should never have been out in that position.
Rolls Royce of a first half, look exposed from 60-90. At least he didn’t hide.
Emre Can: 4
Scored the best goal of his Liverpool career, got an assist and, yet, no-one will care.
For all the good technique and accuracy when he’s got time, he’s too immobile when we get turned around and not snappy enough under pressure.
Jordan Henderson: 5
Hamstrung by a yellow card he was probably unlucky to get, played some lovely football and passing was immaculate.
Wasn’t helped by his colleagues but horribly exposed and passive when the tide turned.
Georginio Wijnaldum: 5
Looks great when Liverpool are playing well, seems to get lost in it when it gets frantic.
Needed a bit more steel when it got tetchy and instead went missing.
Sadio Mane: 6
Good goal, better than he has been of late, but first touch can let him down at times. Can’t fault his effort either, was on the edge of our own area to release Origi for his goal.
Roberto Firmino: 5
Quiet, very quiet and an inch short in everything.
Could have done more to help out and provide an extra body late on, which is unlike him and he normally gets stuck in, but far from the worst offender.
Divock Origi: 6
Horrific miss, great goal, on another day gets Liverpool’s fourth and everyone is happy.
SUBS
Adam Lallana (on 69′): 5
Tried a bit too much, maybe? Couple of poor decisions, especially on 90′, electing to shoot instead of pass with the game on a knife edge.

Origi was awful. The goal covered up a lot. So weak at holding the ball.
Agree
His inclusion and subsequently Firmino moving wide kills everything good about this side going forward.
Superb finish, mind, but should’ve had 3
He is always shite when he starts
Enraging but it can happen. We gave in to the sense of inevitability of it all. It was all so obvious it was going to happen as soon as they pulled that second back. The players’ heads all fell off and the moment five minutes went up nothing has been more obvious. The trend of conceding to no-mark players continues.
Needs to be chalked down as ‘one of those’ and that’s how it needs to stay. We are so much better than this and need to respond emphatically.
Karius @ 2?
Generous.
Seriously, is he an upgrade on Simon?
Thank God for these ratings Andy. Just read Ian Doyles on the Echo and thought I was going insane. Absolutely no idea what game he watched. Agree with all these except perhaps Origi. Great goal but little else
The only positive is we got the result we wanted.
We clearly wanted to lose.
Henderson is great at passing back. If that’s the criterion of a good performance then he should get 10 every week. The pass to Origi was really good, apart from that he was imitating a wall the number of times the ball simply went back to where it came from.
Up until the capitulation, Henderson was immense in my opinion. Same for Milner. Neither really culpable either
Its when the wheels are falling off that you need Henderson to be immense not when you’re cruising.A strong Captain holds his team together and closes that game out for a win. Unfortunately this guy isn’t a strong Captain
Completely disagree. He was scared to challenge after his unjust yellow. Didn’t want to get sent off and put his team at risk. Henderson’s a very good captain.
The Emre Can hate from TAW is getting beyond a joke now. Henderson is bang average but hailed like a hero, while Can is technically in a whole different league and scapegoated every week. I wonder why.
Whatever happened to defenders throwing themselves in front of shots? Clyne just has to lie down in front of their third. Karius is as bad for their second as for their last for me. There was nowhere else the bloke could have put it. The other transfers have been great but I am not so keen on having a work in progress as a keeper.
Beyond that, we seem to lack a way of defending when the press is not working. Seemed like Hendo against the world at times.
Agree with KM1806 ref Origi. Two goals came as a result of his lack of strength/fight. Great finisher, no good in patterned play. Wijnaldum comments just wrong, Andy. Never stopped, strong, intelligent. Caan went missing, not Gini. Needed to switch Bobby and Origi after 70, Fermino much more effective in centre, Origi can run people.
All down to keeper though; Ming will be back Subday. Sick, long miserable train journey ahoy.
My head has fallen off, I hope the players don’t react like I did. I want to hammer Karius but somewhere in the back of my mind, I’m sure Mignolet was just as terrible and unconvincing. It’s clear that Klopp isn’t going to change from Karius so this is going to happen from time to time. Although it won’t be enough to derail a top 4 bid, it might be too much for a title bid in this season of the return of proper big, talented & consistent teams. Fuck sake. Toxic Thunder My Arse.
Thanks for ratings Andy. Agree with most of it.
The only real class act today was Bournemouth and their fans for not giving up and giving it a real go – and boy did they!!! Well done to them. I rate their team, their fans and our traveling fans a 10/10.
Here’s what I read on TIA:
“That is precisely why Liverpool don’t win league titles anymore. The standard of the goals conceded were unacceptable. Karius was very poor, and Lovren and Lucas not far behind in the second-half.” – summed up by Henry Jackson (This Is Anfield) during live coverage
The team collapsed letting in 4 goals! WTF!! I said it before, Liverpool and Klopp need to understand that Chelsea have found a way to win and we have to as well to keep up.
Toxic Thunder turned to Toxic Shit in the second half. Lovren today once again highlights why he never was and never will be the type of defender most of us hope he should be.
Karius is not convincing in the way of a direct upgrade for Mignolet. The guy has not been tested properly, and today he received his proper test. Shows you how good Matip has been in front of him.
Henderson is and always be an average player to me. I have never been convinced and that one worldie at Chelsea is not enough to change my mind. He is not the type of leader or captain the media and some fans desperately want him to be.
So what happened to defending at 3-1 up? Why did Klopp choose to keep Lucas on instead of bringing on Klavan? Lucas has his moments, but this was not them.
Why bring on Lallana when you have kids on the bench who are 100% fit to play, and can build more confidence, maybe add to the tally?
Origi and Firmino give the ball away cheaply when it really matters. Their holding on to the ball is even worse in a game like this.
Overconfidence or whatever have you took us out properly this time. But we keep letting teams come back with cheap goals.
Looking at the table, Chelsea will lose games, and so will Arsenal and City, but to who and when will add to the mix, if Liverpool do not pick up their heads and go again – tough ask here.
Why does Liverpool have to be in an underdog position to stay consistent? Why always depend on Coutinho or Sturridge, etc? Is it that Klopp probably knows that his depth in the squad is not deep enough for this?
What were Winaldum and Can doing when we’re not on the front foot? I feel bad for Milner and Clyne. I think they are often take the brunt of things when that Lovren or Lucas fuck up.
Sorry but I like many of you today are just wondering what a fucking chance we had to keep up with the plastics. I can’t believe they are back on top and so convincingly. If you doubt it, then go watch the Man City vs Chelsea replay from yesterday. They have quality and quality in spades. The players are intelligent no matter what we think of them or their owner, etc.
West Ham are next and they will give us a hammering mind you if we play like we did today. Please let’s not think we’re league title contenders, etc. Just focus on the next game and right what has been done wrong. Not much else.
We can do this if we stay focused – I wish Klopp can get the Red Machine back to full effect. He’s going to need more than just the 12th man against the Hammers. Those guys know how to spoil the party.
Up the Reds!!!
Feel better Sash? I too was pretty disconsolate after the display in the last 20 minutes but come on – suggesting Henderson is “average” and predicting West Ham will hammer us – a bit of an overreaction perhaps? It was just one of those days and we know they’ll probably happen for everyone at some stage. There’s no doubt if we can eliminate the silly mistakes (Lovren, Origi for the first two, Karius for the last) then we’ll win more of those games than we lose. Long way to go yet.
When we sparkle and the fancy stuff is coming off, we are as good as anyone in the league. But you win titles with a backbone, and ours isn’t right. The keeper is awful, Lovren always has a stupid mistake in him and we don’t have anyone who sniffs danger in midfield.
Karius needs to be dropped. Let’s be honest, we all wanted him to be better than Mings but he clearly isn’t. At least not in this form and that is all that matter. Time to sit on the bench and see if he can come back.
The shot through his hands and over the bar?
The simple cross in the 1st half spilled and allowed to roll into the side netting?
And then the goals. Dear lord.
At least he didn’t concede a corner from a goal kick.
Ming’s may not be the best keeper in the league but we currently have the worst in goal.
Firmino doesn’t deserve a 5.
On one hand, I can’t believe we are desperate to offload Sakho. On the other, who are we kidding?
We used to throw on Joe Allen to break up play when teams threatened to turn around a game. Since Wijnaldum is the new, larger Joe Allen, I would have liked to have seen Klopp give firm directions for him to sit alongside Henderson and just get stuck in and break up play (not sure yet if he has that grit, but that’s my hope). Emre Can was supposed to be our next superstar DM, but eff me if he isn’t slow on a turn.
I’ve never been convinced of Karius, and the last few outings by Mignolet suggests that he finally took heed of the issues around commanding the box and especially distributing quickly. It seems knee jerk to switch after two clean sheets by Karius, but its been coming for some time as far as I’m concerned.
All in all, I’d rather lose an enthralling match to the Cherries than against rivals of a dire Pulis match. We live by the sword, and that’s how we’ll probably die, too. Learn the lessons and move on.
We had a bad day at the office. Got a little casual when we should have been brutal. Credit to the Cherries.
A backstep, yes, but the response is now all that matters.
Heads-up. Nothing is decided at this point of the season.
Conte was beaten by us and thrashed by Arsenal. He made his change to his favoured back 3 like he succeeded with at Juve. He closed shop and switched midfield. His attacks are now fearless and getting stronger even if they don’t dominate possession, their counter stacking is ruthless.
Klopp needs to give us this stability because we can’t rely on exhausting and mesmerising our opponents to defeat. Injuries and cards will always disrupt our momentum from game to game. We Must start with a proven, not potential, keeper. Must get in a solid defender better than Matip to bench Lovren. Need to show Can or Henderson how to take out opponents without injuring them or getting sent off- boss that midfield like bollocks. Needs not to have 3 potential wonder kids on the bench when we need 3 alternative game changing men there.
Need to thrash the Hammers. Nothing less.
You’re ratings reflect how I felt Andy, no one was worthy of a mark above 6.
I woke up this morning and still wondering how the fuck it haopened. To be honest yesterday I thought we were very poor but just doing what we had to do, Bournemouth were worse than us for 75 minutes then it clicked for them. Every goal conceded was shambolic.
I commented either on yours or Neil’s piece after West Brom how I’d noticed a pleasing attitude change in supporters when they pulled one back in that game, positivity levels have increased no doubt. However at 2-0 up today I felt nervy as we weren’t even playing well, my spider senses were tingling like mad. To be fair at 3-1 I thought that was it, I felt Bournemouth would offer a little something and we’d seen it off.
My first thought at full time was simply Chelsea do not lose that game, or draw for that matter. They’re the barometer so far as they’re top, Chelsea 2 up at Bournemouth means only one thing.
Thank fuck I didn’t travel all the way down to Bournemouth
I really don’t like getting on the players backs but they were the points I was waiting for us to drop due to Karius. If we play anywhere near our potential we don’t need him at all but today after everyone clocked off after 25 min we needed a half in form keeper to see us through.
His technique seems fine and Im sure he was doing great in Germany but Migs must have paid a witch doctor or something because he can’t save a ball to save himself at the moment.
Obviously Karius is going to get an enormous amount of stick for yesterday, especially from Liverpool figures in the media like Jamie Carragher.
I’m just thankful he has a proper manager like Klopp to shield him from it all. Sadly for Karius he has come to the wrong league when it comes to balanced assessments but he has a manager who will not chuck him under the bus or slaughter him in public (we’ll leave it to Liverpool legends to do that).
Agree with most of the ratings – a bit harsh maybe on Hendo, he was one of the few capabale of making a clean tackle all day – he barely touched the bloke for the yellow, he twisted his own ankle.
A bad mistake from Lovren cost us that game. As Jocky Hansen used to say, ‘nobody’s ever scored from the back row of the stand’ -find row Z instead of being clever and dropping Millie in the shit with a little cushioned header and someone breathing down your neck. Having said that, we got control again, got over our blip, and scored a third – that should have been game over. But no, its never that straightforward…
While not wishing to have our ‘keeper thrown under the bus, he didn’t help himself. To be fair to Migs, he probably saves the peno – it was shit, and identical to the one he scored last week. For Karius, one save of note, all other ‘handling’ (I know, hands need to be involved…) looked like he was catching a bar of soap in the shower, or he was grasping thin air. If that was Joe Hart, he’s saving all bar maybe the third one – he’s certainly not spilling it into someone’s path 3 yards out at 3-3 in added time. Put £25m or £30m on the table in January, Citeh’d snap our hands off.
Keepers don’t win you silverware, but by God they can lose you it – just ask Arse fans (Flapianski, Almunia, Lehmann…)
