JAMIE Carragher insists Jürgen Klopp was the only outstanding candidate for the Liverpool job and labelled him a “special manager”, as he approaches his first year in charge.
The German has led the Reds to two cup finals in 12 months, and is currently enjoying a flying start to the season with his side unbeaten in seven games in all competitions.
Carragher and Sky colleague Thierry Henry went viral with their reaction to former manager Brendan Rodgers’s sacking just over a year ago and he has insisted that there was only one candidate who stood out at the time.

He told the ECHO: “I said when Rodgers was sacked and Henry had his hand over my thigh, the only man Liverpool should be going for was Jürgen Klopp, he was the outstanding candidate and available.
“There may have been some people at the time who thought Klopp was looking at teams closer to the top and winning the biggest trophies around because although Liverpool weren’t struggling we weren’t where we wanted to be — hence why Brendan Rodgers lost his job.”
The former Reds defender thinks that there isn’t anybody better suited to the club, and has backed Klopp to win trophies with Liverpool.
“I think Klopp is a special manager, at the moment I don’t think we could get anyone better than him in how he’s suited to the club,” he added.
“In terms of winning a league or the cup, sometimes it’s not just about what you do but what the other teams do.
“You could have a season, it could be this season, are we the best squad? Probably not but we’ve made a great start.
“In terms of Klopp over these next couple of seasons, he’s been to two cup finals and you hope a manager like that can bring us some trophies.”
Liverpool have won five of their first seven league games, with the bookies making them second-favourites for the title, and Carragher reckons Klopp has been a great addition to the league, as well as the club.
“I think he’s been everything we expected him to be. A fantastic football manager but also a fantastic character and addition to the Premier League.
“I can’t think of anybody else out there who would be a better fit for our club.”

At the time I was gutted we sacked Brendan and I still am sad it never worked out. When he did go, Diego Simeone was who I wanted here as I love watching Atletico and loved how he turned then in to a real team who work for each other and no one would mess with, but looking back I’m made up we got Klopp, he is perfect for us and maybe we’re perfect for him.
