THE concluding part of our 87/88 trilogy sees Neil Atkinson, Mike Nevin, Gary Shaw and John Mackin debate whether or not Barnes, Beardsley, Aldridge, Whelan et al formed Liverpool’s greatest ever side.
They certainly agree it was Liverpool’s most entertaining side and the entertainment hasn’t finished yet. How good was Liverpool 5 Nottingham Forest 0? How did losing the unbeaten run at Everton feel?
And the cup final against Wimbledon – why did Liverpool not turn up on the day? There’s so much to this side and so much to this season. Huge thank you to Mike, Gary and John for this – it’s been a pleasure.
Now let’s all get on youtube and watch Kenny’s boys do their thing.
Great show fellas. There’s been a lot of revisionism about Kenny Mark 1 and the long decline of LFC, but that’s not how it felt at the time. The truth is that Kenny’s side was in a continuum of great Liverpool sides which evolved gradually and would go on forever. The thing that kills me now is the complacency: we expected to win everything and took the 1987 side for granted. Kenny would lead us to further glories (remember how young he was) and would be replaced by someone else from within the club upon his trophy-garlanded retirement 10-20 years hence. Sadly it wasn’t to be, the combination of Heysel and Hillsborough knocked the stuffing out of us.
