This is interesting. I’m a member of Sporting Kansas City and if we want to miss a game we can put our tickets up for sale through the club website for market price. Which because there is a high demand for tickets we can actually make money off of our tickets.
You cover some interesting ground here but skirt around the problem of people keeping season tickets on despite the named ticket holder never actually using the ticket. I know this was touched on (vaguely) in comments about tickets being handed down through families, and the idea that people can always get a ticket if they want one and they know where to look / who to ask, but this is a massive problem that should be addressed. I agree that you should be able to let a mate go to the game in your stead if your are unable to make it to a match every now and again. However, there are too many people who are sitting on tickets, never attending the match themselves and selling them on. I may be way off the mark here but this is my feeling based on years of experience having both bought the season ticket of a friend of a friend for a season, bought match tickets in a similar way and struggled to buy tickets through the members sale. It’s a vicious circle through the members sale as you can’t get tickets for half of the games you want unless you attended X amount of games from the previous season. However, despite the fact you did attend every home game last season you still don’t qualify for some matches as you had to buy some tickets off season ticket holders who no longer go the match themselves but sell them on, or you had to buy them off touts. People end up with a network of a dozen possible options for a ticket (depending on the game) which inevitably leads to you ending up paying over the odds in certain circumstances. For example, I have taken my young son to a lot of games where I have had to pay for two adult tickets as I’ve been unable to get tickets through ‘legitimate’ channels. It’s a shame really as him and his mates are the future of our support. How are they gonna learn the songs and feel the history – develop a connection? How are they going to have the opportunity to bring their youthful enthusiasm to the match, build the atmosphere and inspire our players to give of their best? Anyway, rant over – has anyone got any tickets for Stoke?
For a supporter from New Zealand, this seems like such a first world problem to me. I wish I could see any Liverpool game live!
I really enjoyed getting your perspective on the matter, though it sounds extremely complex. It sounds like we just need more seats!!
