SUMMER. I love it. As much as Kanye adores Kanye. Probably more (if that’s possible). But if heat is the dog’s dingly-danglies, hot air is its diarrhoea that you have to scoop up.
And it’s everywhere. Especially on Twitter. You’ll find truck loads of it there.
There have been more weather warnings than players linked with Liverpool over the last few days, which is remarkable, but there really should have been some sort of caution on the stifling fume hovering over the club.
There are some who cannot stomach the current owners. And the manager. The captain-in-waiting? Bin that and give the armband to the lad-desperate-to-leave. The incoming backroom staff? They should sod off and they haven’t even been officially announced yet. The chief executive, Nivea as a sponsor, the chef, the woman with the red hair at the Anfield club shop: THEY’RE ALL NOT GOOD ENOUGH. NOTHING AT LIVERPOOL IS GOOD ENOUGH.
Snide is in style. Fume is the fashion.
The club should do whatever it is they aren’t doing, until of course they do just that. Some are not satisfied unless they’re picketing and poisoning. Even when the majority celebrated the signing of Firmino, they were still promoting their placards of Ifs and Buts.
‘If he was really that special, Manchester United would have done everything to get him.’
‘But he’s no Luis Suarez.’
These are the sort you can do zero about. Nothing pleases them more than their own discontent. On Monday, it emerged Liverpool were set to land Bobby Adekayne, a 16-year-old from Barcelona’s super gifted supply chain. A fan immediately tweeted me to inform me it was “obvious they have decided he is not good enough for them,” which was preceded by him asking “why would they sell him if he was that promising?”
The only obvious thing was that he hadn’t read anything about the player, or the situation and instantly decided a negative stance was the right one. Too often for too many, this is the default setting.
Some didn’t get past Sean O’Driscoll’s name after it was reported that he’ll be Liverpool’s new assistant manager. It wasn’t Spanish enough. Neither was it prefixed with ‘Pep Guardiola’s deputy’ or ‘a disciple of Jurgen Klopp’ — you know, the automatic quality assessment tool.
Others got as far as the right sidebar on Wiki. Lower leagues. That was that. There are those who haven’t bothered to do the ABCs on him yet they’re busy F-ing away.
Some who put in the effort to research his philosophy only to find it’s in line with that of Brendan Rodgers are crawling in their skin – it’s another sign that the manager, contrary to their every hope, is still the manager.
‘WHY HAVEN’T FSG MADE A STATEMENT BACKING HIM?’ Hiya, Liverpool’s spending thus far and the shaking up of the backroom team under his direction is worth much more than words.
‘WHY HASN’T BRENDA (yeah, that’s dead clever) SAID ANYTHING ABOUT THE NEW SIGNINGS?’ Lads, have you not been mouthing off about how he mouths off too much?
Before, like a piece of Nandos chicken, I get flame-grilled to perfection — there is absolutely nothing wrong with questioning things, being concerned about stuff, feeling underwhelmed, and having healthy debates; it is all part of being a supporter.
But there is absolutely everything wrong with being so determinedly against whatever your club is doing. For the sake of it. I honestly think it has become routine for a bunch — as natural as brushing their teeth every morning and closing their eyes every evening.
Like most, I think about Liverpool a lot. I worry a lot. I question a lot. It’s my job, but moreover, it’s my passion. As I’m sure it’s yours. And yours…
The pursuit of Christian Benteke alone keeps me up most nights, partly because I can’t understand it, but also because I am desperate to comprehend it. If he does line up for Liverpool, I want him to smash all my question marks into the back of the net. I want him to give my reservations the biggest of Fuck Yous. And then some.
I cannot imagine stewing in a state of constant negativity, or being fuelled by finding fault in everything.
Like most, I don’t want to be right about Liverpool. I want to be right with Liverpool.
And that’s the thing — LIKE MOST. Those who, above everything else, want the club to climb and conquer outnumber those clothed in their unrelenting thirst for cynicism and ‘I told you sos.’
We just need to make sure it stays that way.

nice article. you read my mind. particularly over benteke.
I’ve seen a few of these articles about the overwhelming negativity. About how people moan about anything, Rodgers teeth, his home decor etc etc etc but it all seems to come from Twitter.
Here’s a thing………get off Twitter!!!
Or at the very least stop following the fucktards that come out with this nonsense.
I’m not on Twitter so I don’t see much of any of it. You see some mouthpieces on the occasional forums but not to the extent that’s often described on Twitter.
Tell Twitter to do one!!
Just for the record I couldn’t give 2 fucks that Rodgers hasn’t said anything to the media recently or FSG.
I do have concerns that we may be spending £32mil on a striker that seemingly doesn’t fit us and one that’s similar to ones that we’ve sold or are trying to sell.
I’m also concerned that we are about to bring in an assistant manager that has zero experience in the Prem, zero experience in the CL and zero experience in the EL. And he has to advise our manager who doesn’t have much experience either.
They are very real concerns and ones that should be talked about rationally.
Spot on!!
O’Driscoll has plenty of experience, just not the kind you value. Have a look at the staff for other top clubs and tell me how many assistants within those ranks have this vaunted “pedigree” that some are banging on about? Very, very few. Most follow one of three trajectories. They start as youth coaches and work their way up (Marsh). They start their careers with a manager who becomes very successful and stay on (Pascoe). Or they go off, try a hand at managing, don’t take off but are still immensely talented and are recruited as assistants (O’Driscoll). That’s it.
What it seems many wanted was an oft unnamed (except Pako, who made it clear he’s not interested in being anyone’s number two) ready-made candidate fitting criteria they aren’t able to define for a job they don’t really understand. What we have here are the echos of much broader disappointment from last season’s soul-crushing terminus drowning out sober and measured opinion, sometimes even within our own heads. In O’Driscoll’s case It’s much ado about NOTHING, and after what has been a pretty fucking positive 10 days it comes across as negativity for its own sake rather than constructive criticism or valuable insight.
Everyone who know football says Rodgers has lost the dressing room, so he hides for a month and it all changes, fuck off fool. When he finally goes go with him and sit on his face
Absolutely no idea what this post is about, who it’s addressed to or anything.
However you sound like one of those fucktards off Twitter that I’m hearing so much about.
Do one!!
Well said. Fuck off Paul, pick another team. Any team, maybe one in the lower leagues where your shit spewing won’t travel as far. Or a local team, so you can do it in person and you’re opinion won’t take up any space and be save forever on the internet. Better yet move abroad, find a tribe that hasn’t yet been introduced to this beautiful game, or twitter and educate them on the art of talking shite and being a knob head “supporter”. Try explaining to them how you think what you are doing is helpful, and if you succeed come back and explain to us. Cheers.
Another great site up Melissa.
Never gonna stop the moaners moaning. Most of the moans are agenda driven as they don’t like BR (who isn’t back from holiday until the 5th so isn’t gonna be commenting much..!) deapite him giving us one of our best seasons yet in the prem.
The support is noticeably worse as there are more and more blogs and comments sections around for keyboard warriors to be dickheads on.
I don’t get to as many away days at the moment but you can usually get the best feel for how things are going from those lads – a world away from the Twitter ITK’s..!
Things are massively positive at the moment And hopefully O’Driscoll will be able to add his own ideas to the pitch to support the managers ideas. The reds are coming up the hill…
Superb.
We wouldn’t need wind farms if we could bottle the fume from Liverpool fans on Twitter.
Is there anything more annoying, repetitive and obvious than someone saying Liverpool fans (or fans of any club) disagree? Its as if we’re all supposed to think as one. Its ridiculous.
And can you not come up with someone more original than what is now an exceedingly boring dig at a lot of twitter users who support Liverpool? Ive read it in 4 or 5 articles on here in the last few weeks. Its like groundhog day.
Meanwhile every decision taken at Liverpool is never criticised by anyone on here right after its been made – but Im sure it will be when its proven to have been wrong months down the line.
To all TAW writers – when will one of preemptively say that you think FSG/Rodgers have done something that will do more harm than good to the future prospects of LFC? When will one of you grow some balls?
Pretty sure they do Leanne, otherwise no one would listen to them. Try reading Melissa’s article on benteke for a lesson on how to be constructively critical (although I personally don’t agree with its conclusions as I think benteke has the potential to be much more than he is at villa).
O’driscoll seems to be a good signing, much better than carragher in any case who I am sure would have gone down a treat on twitter. Ballsy appointment by FSG, really like them as owners despite them being quite distant (another complaint that is frequently brought up on the show.
bits of the anfield index podcast are like the worst bits of Twitter condensed into a podcast. whoever jags and Nina are should be ashamed of themselves. spitting bile and venom about everything. everything is negative and whoever the manager is they will hate.
I felt really angry after listening to the podcast
Couldn’t agree more Paul.
Someone told me I should check it out but I quickly grew a strong dislike to their presenters and the nonsense they talked.
Yer woman Nina done my fucking tits in!
Er. It’s you and your crowd at TAW who make a living doing just that!!!!!!!
#doublestandard
Last time I looked mate we’re not just saying everything is shit. All the best. #er
That’s not my point.
You have a decent spread of folk who have different opinions. That’s why they are there.
It’s ok for you lot to voice concerns but not us? !
#havingastephi
When the folks at TAW criticize, they do it in a constructive way that invites discussion and debate, not a platform for fume. I don’t always agree with their pov, but I would put up with any of their opinions before I delve into what’s being spewed by the Bell ends on twitter.
Yep, that’s what is being said. You’re not allowed to speak. Please ensure compliance. #toohotforshite
Well I say TAW. Or as I call them ‘The Fuck Around Gang ‘.
Thanks for that. Arsed.
“Meanwhile every decision taken at Liverpool is never criticised by anyone on here right after its been made”
Hahahahaha
And that right there is the most ridiculous thing on this page..!!
One hot day and folk are spitting and fuming. It’s like 1976 all over again.
Another very well written piece Melissa, your articles are quickly becoming compulsory reading.
There are very valid questions and concerns to be had with Liverpool’s dealings (or perceived dealings) this summer, but to approach each of these with a default stance of negativity takes all the fun out of supporting the club for me. The reality is we have zero influence on any of these decisions, so we can only hope the decision makers know what they are doing, and get behind our club.
Someone made a very good point a few days back, a few good points infact, when it comes to Benteke.
The “he won’t fit the system” shouts are incorrect because the guy who wants him is the guy who decide what the system is. ”
We don’t cross the ball”, firstly, two of Sturridges goals were from crosses, Sterlings stunner at Newcastle? Yep, a cross. Even Sterling himself played a few good crosses in but nobody knew what to do about them. There were so many crosses in last season that were pointless because nobody knew what to do with them.
My favourite one, “what are Firmino and Coutinho supposed to do with him up front?”, who has Fiminho been playing behind? Big guys, pure number 9’s, none of that wide forward, false 9 whatever. So no, having Benteke upfront won’t be something new to him.
Point is, stop this poisonous negativity about him, this whole “I’ll hate him till he signs for us” crap is ridiculous. We might not even sign him yet people are acting like next is already over just because the club won’t sign the players they want, the exotic names they can brag about. Go to a Man U/Arsenal/Chelsea forum, they too have misgivings, sure, but nothing like what I’ve seen from Liverpool fans. So whats the real problem?
Well argued point. I’m not totally convinced Benteke is right for us, but if he does fit in, it’ll be for the reasons described here. Plus the fact that he’s far from a headers-only striker – see the goal against us last season where he very cleverly stopped running, let our defense run away from him to make space and then slot away the pull-back.
And I really really hope he does work, because he’s a 30 goal a season striker in the right system and with a bit of luck with injuries. It’s an exciting signing regardless!
Melissa, take it as a huge compliment that I found a bunch of TAW articles I haven’t read and went immediately to yours. You’ve been doing a smashing job of articulating my own thought process, which has added value in these dark times when so many are ready to go for the jugular if you try to find a balanced point of view about the club.
Part of football, wish we would stop this rhetoric bullshit about our own fans across TAW, every club will have tits on Twitter, you can’t even begin to call them to account or representative of our club. Example is that baldy fellah who started posting shit about Rodgers personal life, let’s not even be associated with that hey?
We all know Arlarses from the Main Stand who wouldn’t be the same without moaning, fucking hell it’s my favourite part of the get-togethers, the same moaner start to get a glisten in their eye as soon as we ask them who scored the hat-trick against Wolves on his debut, which end did he score his third, what happened off the ball with Bremner and Keegan?
One thing I don’t like, is the getting on players backs, but, there’s always going to be people getting on players back like Sterling, especially fuelled by his actions, ticket prices, like Mike said the other day, we’re quick to call owners, players, press and management to account but we’re also quick to embrace (Torres, Rafa, Luis, Coutinho), it’s everything that’s boss about our club and what has made us successful, wouldn’t have it any other way, let’s chill out on our fanbase heh?
p.s. Melissa, I usually love your stuff, but, don’t comment positively – only when I want to moan, typical hey!! ;)
