Sid Lowe has been covering Spanish football now for many a year and his insight into the mentality, approach and poise of this Real Madrid side is very much worth listening to.
In a conversation which shifts around approaches, control, the importance of luck and the futility of analyses, Sid and Neil Atkinson picture a side who are looking forward to a game against fellow European Royalty and who will not be as complacent as being painted by many commentators both in and outside of Madrid and Liverpool.
Real Madrid do not have only one way of playing and therefore can hurt Liverpool in many different ways but are therefore vulnerable in lots of different ways too.
It will be an intriguing encounter and this is an intriguing chat between Sid and Neil.

I’m a big fan of Sid’s podcast The Spanish Football Podcast – so it’s really cool to see this collaboration. Cannot wait for Saturday. Wish I could just go to sleep now and wake up Saturday morning.
I’d just add one thing about the whole ‘Real writing us off’ line that came up on this (brilliant) podcast and other shows on TAW. A lot of the most disparaging stuff coming out of Madrid, as quoted by Robbo in Talking Reds, was written by Diego Torres. He is getting loads of shit for it from RM fans, since he has an agenda – he’s very pro-Barça and was partly responsible, with the dressing room rows he made public, for Mourinho eventually being forced out. The accusation is that by making out that Liverpool are really poor, he’s belittling the achievement if RM win, and painting it as a humiliation if they lose. And given the fact he’s banging out patronising bollocks at the rate of one article a day about Liverpool, those RM fans might have a point.
sid lowe made the comment, Liverpool will have no fear. Real Madrid are what they are boo hoo etc
We can beat these at their best game. An old Liverpool way. WE WILL CHOKE THEM. Up The Reds
He was great you should have him on more.
That’s the best summary of Real Madrid I’ve heard. They have been such a strange beast under Zidane. It frustrated me that they can’t be compartmentalized the way virtually any other team can be. I don’t think they’re exceptionally well coached or organized, but they have a little bit of everything & they do it all with players of the highest quality, and they believe, and they this & that & the other. Let’s hope our way wins out.
Love when you have Sid on. The Spanish Football podcast is good stuff.
