Great show, guys, and 3 scrappy but well-earned points.
BTW, does anyone know why what Mane did against Palace is a yellow but what Lamela did against us is a penalty? I’m in the States watching the studio analysts, and everyone who agreed that VVD’s foul on Lamela was a pen now somehow agree that the Mane booking for simulation was the correct. My head is absolutely spinning.
Was a HELL of a result … the most important of the season in terms of getting that all important top 4 spot. BUT, we’re still a side who rely on the clinical edge up front … and I disagree slightly that we’re now a TEAM who overcome these tough games. We MUST get a midfield to match our ambitions, it’s crucial now. The attack is one of the best, the back is getting much better, but that midfield … it’s RANK without Can or Adam.
Reds didn’t play well, however, first half Mane deflected Virgil’s header just wide, the offside goal at the corner could easily have not been offside, and the penalty was contact and if you look at the penalties given against and for us, then it should have been given. On another day it could have been 1-3 at half time. Heads didn’t drop, they came back and opened up Palace in the end. Palace could of scored more and Trent was targeted with the flick on again. Big Ben missed, which is a shock because most players against Liverpool tend to score when given a sniff.
The massive plus is winning a game we have lost or at best drawn 19 times out of 20 over the past 27 years. At 1-0 down away from home with chances been missed and penalties not given following an international break with a kick off at 12.30 is a game I have seen many times over. Today the script changed and we walk on with 3 points. In many ways this is better than a 5-0 crushing, we are boss at that . Winning games from behind takes a lot of mental strength and we had that today. Final point, we are dangerous at corners, Virgil causes havock. If we can start to score from corners and free kicks then it causes even more mental fatigue for opposing defenders.
BANG ON THE MONEY
Irritating sound of cans being cracked open throughout was not good – spoilt for me what was otherwise a decent podcast.
Bit pedantic, no?
This was really good, especially enjoyed the discussion about Mane’s evolution and the point Dan made about how excellent the management team are at turning players into the players they should be. Stu’s point about Mane – a left-sided number 10, dropping off all the time, playing between the lines – I love how no one has said out loud whose tasks these were, and I love how the coaching team just gets on with it and we can see the changes slowly implemented on the pitch.
We’ll fondly remember this Mane performance for the rest of our lives. Thank you, Sadio.
