Rob Gutmann is joined for the latest Overview show to look back at Liverpool’s January by Mike Nevin, Paul Cope and Ian Ryan.
Did Liverpool do enough in the market?
All things considered, are things as bad as the mood in the stands would have you believe?
Have Liverpool’s rivals and their form done the Reds a favour?
Ok let’s look at our situation.
Not gonna win the league, not even close.
Out at the first hurdle of the league cup.
For the 3rd year running we can’t get past the 4th round of the FA cup.
We weakened our squad mid season which made it harder to win anything or progress as high up the table as possible.
We are very unlikely to win the CL especially seeing as we sold our best player midseason and didn’t replace.
We might still qualify for next years CL which is now being heralded by some as “a good season”.
I feel as a fan base we sell ourselves massively short and our expectations are so low now that merely qualifying for Europes top comp is seen as “a good season”.
Right throughout the club from top to bottom we need to adopt the mentality of winners. Acceptance of another year without a trophy and lauding CL qualification is not that mentality IMO.
“Not gonna win the league, not even close”
Out of 20 possible league places, we are 3rd at time of writing.
In my book, that’s fucking close. In contention.
Especially given the league was won by November.
In terms of numbering teams from 1-20 yeah it’s close but be honest with yourself lad we’ve been nowhere near challenging for the title this season.
Not even close.
No-one is anywhere close to challenging for the title. City are having a record breaking season. For us to be ‘even close’ would mean having a record breaking season ourselves.
The primary aims for this season were always going to be a repeat top 4 finish to consolidate on last season and a decent run in the CL. A shiny thing would have been a very welcome bonus but achieve both of the afore mentioned aims and its very difficult to deny its further progress thats been made.
Put off listening to shows when I see Mike Nevin on them now.
I thought Rob did very well managing, facilitating, and directing the discussion. It sounded like hard work though.
Ignore the haters Mr Nevin. Love your work.
