Gareth Roberts was joined for the latest edition of The Big Match by Dan Austin, Ian Salmon, Mike Nevin and Dan Morgan to talk through and over the second half of Liverpool’s historic FA Cup victory over a cocksure Newcastle United and mighty mouth Malcolm Macdonald.
The FA Cup Final Big Match: Liverpool 3 Newcastle 0

Hi lads. Listening to the 1974 cup final show. Kind of deja vu moment. I was listening to AFQ and the question ‘what was your favourite moment’. Aside from my kids being born, being a 13 year kid in the Liverpool end was up there and seeing my dad shed a tear (never saw him cry before or after). Was thinking this aloud ,when Gareth announced the 1974 show !
Couple of bits of feedback. Supermac went to arsenal from Newcastle not the other way around. He should have stayed in the north east as arsenal were in decline.
Songs I remember were ‘Supermouth’ and ‘Macdonald is a Womble’. I thought the Liverpool songs were just as loud as the geordies. After crying my eyes out after Charlie George and 1971 final nothing could describe the feeling after the second goal and knowing we were going to win, and singing ‘we shall not be moved’ with the whole end shaking.
Plenty more great nights after that but thanks for reminding me of my dad and a great day
Cheers
Clive
You even set us up to sync it. Nooice.
Good listen this one. I especially liked the references to the 60 yard volleyed back passes.
There should be more of these Big Matches.
Love these podcasts, but Mike Nevin loves a moan doesn’t he.
Won’t hear a word against Mike Nevin: fiery, engaged and with a dash of witty snark. He’s the grit in the oyster.
‘You should’ve stayed at Anfield,’ was the big chant to Keegan on his return if memory serves.
