More of a summation of a month than a discussion of a day but Liverpool’s incoming transfer business would appear to be done and to have been done for some time.
It’s our last Transfer Gutter show of the January window and taking stock are Rob Gutmann, John Gibbons, Dan Morgan and Neil Atkinson.
Very very well put, Dan!
Have we swooped for Snoogy Doogy yet?
Hold on a wee second here lads.
13/14 season we had Salah lined up for that Jan with reports that a deal had been agreed in Dec.
As Jan approached we tried to renegotiate the terms which fucked off several parties which allowed Chelsea to come in.
It was only at the end of that window that we tried to bring in that Russian winger.
If we’d signed Salah would we have won the league? Who knows but I’d say there’d be a very good chance Salah could have helped us gather those few more points we needed.
Unfair on a player to replace Phil?? Bloody hell lads, how soft do you want to be? … Protecting VVD last night … He’s a 75m defender!! … You’ll be having a VERY different podcast if Bobby were to break his leg in two weeks time.
Pathetic boys pathetic. The 2 comments above are correct. I know, lets not make a signing in the summer incase it makes us worse!
All we could do is give ourselves every chance we could to improve the team after losing Coutinho but we didn’t. No excuses. No letting Klopp or FSG off the hook. If Lemar is who we want then why will he be cheaper in the summer? He won’t! It will be quite the opposite plus more competition for his signature and we’re a Firmino bad injury away from probably not qualifying for champs league which means less money and no chance if signing the absolute best. Something isn’t right behind the scenes and you lot are ignoring for some reason. Hmmm?
Monaco were looking £90mil for him last summer.
They asked for £90mil again this window.
They’ll prob ask for £90mio again next window and if not it’ll prob only be about £10mil cheaper.
However CL q/fs are worth approx £70/80mil he could have helped with that this season.
CL qualification next season is worth approx £50mil, he could have helped with that.
If we’d brought him in early he could have helped with that FA cup game.
Even if we didn’t qualify for CL at least we’d have him at liverpool.
On 30th August 2017 the club briefed the press that we had £175mil to spend on deadline day. Since then we’ve spent £75mil and recouped another £104mil guaranteed. Taking the club at its word, we should have had budget available for £200mil spending this month.
We’ve known since 2016 that Barca wanted Coutinho, at some point between September and December this season, a decision was made that we’d be open to selling him in January.
To not do anything after selling him; it’s not ‘avoiding panic buys’, it’s not ‘saving money for the summer’, it’s not ‘wanting to preserve morale’. It’s hubris and a lack of ambition. Hubris that the manager can carry on doing what he’s doing while missing a star forward, and a lack of ambition saying that what we are doing is ‘good enough’ anyway.
If we finish 4th and reach the quarters of the Champions League; that’s not this gamble paying off. That’s meeting minimum expectations.
We’re on 1 trophy in 12 years, 7 of those under current ownership. It’d be nice if we stopped planning for a future that never comes and started doing everything we can to win today.
The club didn’t brief journalists they were going to spend £175m on deadline day. Journalists came up with the figure based on the fact the club were buying Chamberlain were chasing VVD and were bidding 70m for Lemar. Liverpool have spent £110 on two of those targets and have also committed up to £66m for Keita.
Klopp has said all the Coutinho money is available to be invested in the squad, and i think that is the only expectation about future transfer spending that you can say the club has set for the fans.
Just some of the shit excuses I’ve been hearing/reading recently around the place for not bringing in anyone…
No1- we don’t want to upset the group dynamic.
Sure we’ll just never sign anyone ever then.
No2-Klopp doesn’t settle for 2nd choice targets.
Apart from Salah of course last summer….and Mané the summer before
No3-We don’t need to panic buy.
Don’t think ya call it panic buying when you’ve known for months that the player wants to leave.
No4- It’s ok, we’ve still got a strong squad.
Emmm, no we don’t. Ings and Solanke are our forward options and Lallana is still injured.
No5- You can’t buy good players in Jan, no one wants to sell.
Yea ya can. Just look at our competitors.
I may stop now. It’s getting cringey.
TAW shows are quickly becoming comedies.
So we will now be spending over £300m in the summer, from the same guys who said we may be spending £200m last summer. Net spend since then less than nothing!
Carry on with the fantasy boys it means you don’t have to address the continuing lack of investment from FSG.
This season LFC have done deals to acquire players that commit the club to spending up to £225m. No one ever said the 200m figure was net, and the phrase “200m war chest” that people seem to fixate on was a just a catchy tag that a journalist used.
My hunch around Mahrez is we’re not interested in him is because he’s African. And not for the same reasons as the West Ham head of recruitment…
Salah, Mane and Keita will all be missing next January due to the African Nations. If we were to add Mahrez into the team, that would have been 4 of the front 5 away for a month with Firmino left by himself. That’s why I was never too fussed about not getting involved in the Aubameyang for the same reason. We struggled enough with just Mane away – already dreading 3 of them away next year!
The African Nations has been moved to the summer.
It was announced last summer.
