Joining Rob Gutmann for the latest Gutter show is the war committee of John Gibbons, Andy Heaton and Gareth Roberts to discuss the latest developments around Philippe Coutinho’s potential Liverpool exit and what Liverpool can do to mitigate such a huge exit.
Talk around Barcelona’s conduct, how much leverage Liverpool have and also some breaking news during the show as both Thomas Lemar and Riyad Mahrez are suddenly heavily linked with the Reds.

I’m just amazed we don’t wait until the summer. If he lights up the World Cup like we think he will what’s Coutinho’s value going to be then? Surely that benefits Liverpool FC more than selling him in January?
Great show lads, personally i’ma big fan of Mahrez…tried and trusted in the Premier league and very talented. I watched him against Utd a few weeks ago and was very impressed, I was also impressed with him at Anfield last week…he can produce something out of nothing, he would be addition to the squad and i’m sure Klopp could make him better! PS do you have any plans to do a TAW live show soon??
Wasn’t Mahrez one of the players who downed tools during the post-EPL title victory spell under Raineri?
There’s no doubt in my mind that Klopp’s assertion that Coutinho will be fit for Manchester City is very much an open challenge to both the player and FSG to sort this mess out. Klopp has put himself on the line there (to an extent) and if we get to the City match and Coutinho is still injured then I think a lot of people will have a lot of questions and it’ll fall on Klopp to provide answers. It’s still a smart move from him though as it’s essentially provided a de facto deadline to get this situation resolved.
Someone at Liverpool in the last week or so has DEFINITELY said the phrase to Jurgen ‘It’s not my cup of tea’. Now THAT’s what I call investigative journalism.
If we sell Coutinho this month it’ll be a fucking ridiculous decision regardless if we bring in Lemar or Mahrez in!
Fucking ridiculous!
We hold the vast majority of cards and we’re just gonna throw them all away because of pressure from Barca and the player. Fuck ’em!
If the 3 options around Coutinho are keeping him long term, selling him in the summer or selling him now, the last of the 3 options there is the worst!
Losing him now does not make footballing or financial sense.
It’s disrupts the teams 2nd half of the season if he goes and even if we did bring in Lemar our team/squad would be weaker. Coutinho may strop for Jan but we’d still have him for the push to solidly top 4 for the rest of the season. I don’t see him striking indefinitely, not in a World Cup year.
Financially he’s worth more in the summer and any deal we try to do this month to bring a replacement in will be vastly inflated because teams will know we’re desperate. It doesn’t make sense.
Personally I’d tell him he’s contracted for several more years but we’ll talk in the summer. Barca can fuck off with their under handed tactics. At some stage we’ve got to stand up to them and make any deal as difficult and expensive as possible so when they next player we have they fancy comes along they’ll think twice or play nice.
Trying to be neutral looking at it, the best compromise for all parties is for a deal to be struck this month for him to leave in the summer. Player gets his move, Barca get their man, we hold onto him for the remainder of the season. Nobody gets everything they want but at the end of it all 3 parties are generally happy.
It is ridiculous to suggest they have been caught out by this. It’s been in the rumor mill since November. And if they some how have been, they should have just told him No. It will happen in the summer or not at all.
I Understand that you have to let players “move up the food chain” if they get the chance, but there is a right way to do it. It need to be a club policy that you get your transfer business done by July 20th or it doesn’t happen. It definitely doesn’t happen in January.
