Rob Gutmann is joined for the latest Gutter show for a discussion around whether Liverpool can afford not to add to their ranks in the January transfer window by Andy Heaton, Mike Nevin and Ian Ryan.
The Gutter: Can The Reds Afford Not To Strengthen?

Really poor podcast. Disappointing. Love your stuff usually but Rob is never in control of his ‘guests’ who constantly cut him off and just ramble on and make assumptions about stuff they don’t really know the ins and outs. ‘Obsessed about transfers’ indeed.
OMG, poor Rob G trying to find some sense in all that fume!! If nothing else, Klopp has earned our trust, and as they all kept saying, he knows a lot more about football and our squad quality..
Mahrez,if reports to be believed wants to join Arsenal.
Honestly, Nevin sounds like an 8-year-old lately.
Rob G is the most level-headed voice re transfers! What have we come to???
Finally, Rob G talked about what we LOSE if we waste 60mil on a “stopgap” transfer. Who says that we can get anyone better than Lallana for that? We already own that level of “stopgap”. As for Mike Nevin’s 30mil transfer–Christ Almighty, that doesn’t get you a squad player now. Where is this magically elite 30mil transfer who will improve our squad and oh, by the way, will feck off in the summer for more money? Unbelievable fantasies at play here.
For all we know, we have persuaded Lemar or Pulisic to choose us in the same way that we persuaded VVD to choose us: we assured them that we wanted them and only them and we have a special place for them and we have confidence they will become an important part of Liverpool, etc. That’s why VVD and Keita turned down other clubs to work with Klopp. It is a powerful appeal; it made VVD turn up his nose at Man City and Pep, and it persuaded Keita to turn down Barca.
In other words, we cannot be successful and get truly elite transfers if we are “risk-averse” and spending all our money on stop-gap transfers. We lost Coutinho but we can beat Man City without him. With Lallana coming into the team again, we have a stop-gap without wasting all kinds of money on someone Klopp doesn’t really want. And we just have to get used to uncertainty. It’s part of life and definitely part of sport, unless there is corruption and you guarantee wins by paying people off.
Agree 100%. Most important transfer is the selling of Mike Nevin to Arsenal fan Tv
Yes
Will Lemar/Pulisic or whoever still want join when we fail to qualify for the CL?
“We’re not looking at anyone new.” Is it not then the case that Klopp & his team have a specific player in mind who isn’t available this window? Much like he came out after Middlesbrough end of last season & said “most of the work has been done already”. You don’t have to be happy about it, but the outrage & demands to spend all the money, literally all of it ever, seem over the top. Fair point at the end that we ultimately all want the same thing & I accept people will see it differently.
TAW, I enjoy the podcasts immensely, so when I say this, it is out of love. Can we please stop talking about Ronny Rosenthal as the model transfer for this season? It was a loan, and I challenge you to find a loan that could have that impact. Additionally, we brought in RR when there was a chance of winning the league with him. If we are not going to do that, what is the use of spending money to come in 2nd rather than 3rd if it means giving up a high-priority transfer in the summer?
What if we finish 5th and out of the CL?
Are these “high priority transfers” still gonna sign up or are they more likely to pick one of the CL clubs?
We were silly already selling one of our best players mid season with loads still to play for, let’s not compound that by not bringing someone else in.
I really didn’t agree with Mike Nevin on the Gutter a while ago after Coutinho left. However, everything he said on this podcast I 100 per cent agree with. He was considerably the most realistic and made salient points. Nice one
Brilliant debate lads. It’s crucial for this podcast that we continue to have determined and often different opinion to reflect the base listening in. And I’m a Heaton fan even though he gets a ‘little assertive’ at times. Nevin reflected my view but I was able to appreciate Rob’s devils advocate perspective.
Keep it up lads.
Excellent debate and mike is talking absolute sense. Brilliant stuff lads..
Like a gang of mates sitting in the pub arguing the toss over the team they love . Brilliant podcast.
Another great podcast, Mike Nevin bang on again. We will be ok in the long term, but for a change we need to start thinking about between now and May. Got a great chance of finishing 2nd, winning the Fa cup and going far in the European Cup. Not strengthening the forward line now is negligent. An injury to one of our forward players without an adequate replacement to rotate in which has been key so far, and it’s game over for the season.
