The last word on a poor performance from Liverpool. What was going on with the goal, the shape and the substitutes?
Working through all of this are Sean Rogers, Ben Johnson and Neil Atkinson in The Anfield Wrap’s long look at a bad day in the office.

I feel like Henderson was playing much deeper last year. I wouldn’t mind seeing Hendo operate as a 3rd CB. Or bring Gomez into the middle to be nasty and smash people.
I can’t. Guys, i can’t, not today. I love the show and listen to it regularly but I can’t today. It was bad enough watching it to then listen to you guys dissect the game would be too much. Tip o’ hat to you all for finding the energy to explain in detail how we can’t score. I’m going to keep drinking in silence. Thanks for the show and the effort.
Totally agree with Sean when he said Klopp subs are arranged before the match starts.
More than a little worrying that for me.Surley you should watch what is in front of you and act accordingly?
The team and moreover Klopp is struggling in no small part down to the transfer activity or lack of it in the summer.
Thought he would be ruthless in the summer, instead he has stayed loyal to players who in all are just not quite good enough in a team going for a title.
Does anyone see any of the 10 or so keepers, full backs or centre backs playing regularly for either Manchester clubs, Spurs or Chelsea?Does not necessarily follow the best players make the best team but some of ours are some way of the best.
Can’t think of one, that’s not to say in the future the likes of Gomez, Robinson and Arnold could well be good enough but we are trying to give these lads a football education while trying to compete for the league, the other teams are just to good to let us do this.
Neil has rightly said many times this job fucks up more managers than any other.everything that makes this club so unique, so wonderfully romantic can be the very thing that ways so heavy and drags you under.
He is struggling, decisions which seemed to come so easy seem so difficult at the moment, Sean often mentions him being a ‘Son of Sachi’ looking a little more like Keegan , motivation will only get you so far He is a top manager, a great fit for this unique club , he has got to re-find what makes him so unique before this season becomes yet another what might have been season all to quickly.
Great listen as ever
Evans and Houllier were fired after finishing third and fourth. Reds will finish sixth. Jk is yesterday’s man.
Analysis has been done on attacking subs either scoring or assisting & whether that makes a difference to points gained & the results suggest subs just aren’t that useful. It’s very rare that an attacking sub can turn a game, that’s why it stands out so much when it works & players rarely have a reputation as a super sub. This study, though limited, suggests 5% of subs score & 2% turn a result: http://eplindex.com/30756/do-substitutes-win-games-stats-analysis.html
Solanke & Firmino came on as a double sub in the 73rd min for Mane & Sturridge. Both were ineffectual & Sturridge in particular looked exhausted. Oxlade-Chamberlain came on in the 83rd min for Salah. I think there’s a logic to all of these, which is about as much as you can ask for. I would like to see them earlier, however, & would have preferred Wijnaldum to be replaced. I remember a stat that Giroud was the only player to score more as a sub during his time in the league than Origi. Origi, of course, got slaughtered by most fans. It wouldn’t surprise me if Klopp had an average or above average record with his subs. Criticizing them is at best subjective & overrates them in the first place.
Good stuff FelixKrull- ta for the link and info.
Personally, I only saw an effective change with subs during Rodgers era, and he had little to choose from bar kids and aging journeymen but changed formations many times mid games (Stamford’s Bridge 2-0 down at half time, reshuffle and subs for 2nd half to get a draw and unlucky for not a win in 12/13? and many others in 13/14. Rafa used subs sometimes to good effect but often to bad effect – eg the throwing away of the league 08/09 from Stoke to Middlesbrough games where in 4 or 5 matching games with United, we threw away leads with his ‘smart subs’ and poor 1st team selections. United got 1-0’s from each – reversing the table top. (Didn’t he create a new record in starting different 1st team?… 103 or something? )
Anyway, I agree Klopp hasn’t a great record with subs and threw away a lead position as recently as vs Watford by such an error.
Show wise – strange – 25? mins talking about a goal that was unfortunate but if SG/PC/JH put that pass in for such a goal, we’d be raving about the pass and goal and move on. Milliseconds counted there and while backs should’ve acted as you say, as Klopp would’ve said- there were where he wanted them- the problem was with DS losing rather than looking to pass, then not following up to regain as Firmino would’ve done… anyway…A lot of players couldn’t find the rhythm and the causes of this weren’t really explored. Instead, all focus was directed by Neil rushing through his introduction to a play, and instead of talking abut the original cause, the cue to discuss is the end part only. Can’t blame you Neil as it’s hard to be enthusiastic and change the focus every time after a defeat to repeat the same conversation on podcasts 3 times and try to vary it about, but I suppose if the team can have an off-day, then the Review Show can be understandably flat too. Intl break welcomed for all for the first time in yonks?…:) YNWA, P
I agree – I thought the subs were in reaction to the game, not pre-arranged, and I was OK with them. I’d have brought AOC on sooner, but on the other hand I like how Klopp is managing him right now.
Yeah, I can’t see Ox being a starter regularly till late October earliest and in the lesser games or away games where formation changes. It becomes worrying when we kinda see the subs will be made even if we don’t think they’ll be the right call, but werenin the pre-match plan to happen.
Love the content but the recurring feed issues and cumbersome nature of using this feed need serious attention.
Mine is not the only message I’ve seen were people have feed issues / listening issues.
My issues are with replaying posts the feed stops or doesn’t start.
There is probably a solution if I do this and reset that etc but there shouldn’t be an issue I don’t need a solution just a better feed.
Cheers Ben Carlton.
