Another new show.
The idea is this – a host has 26 things related to:
a) A letter from the alphabet
b) Liverpool FC and the City Of Liverpool
in a hat to pull out at random and the panel then discusses them.
The host for the first is Dan Austin. The panel is Mike Nevin, Neil Atkinson and Rob Gutmann. So think of all the As that could come out to do with this fine city and these gentlemen. Think how good that chat is…
We had a ball doing this. We hope you will very much enjoy it. Alphabet Soup. Anything could happen.
Not a bad show. But personally I was more interested in the last two football related topics. But that’s because I’m not from the city.
I’m not from the city but found that absolutely fascinating! Can’t wait for the next one!
I liked this show a lot more than some of the others. I suppose, looking at the comment above, that you have to cover a wide variety to get ‘something for everyone’. I’m in interested in geography and spatial science so talk about a City as interesting as Liverpool fascinates me. When TAW started it covered a lot of Liverpool culture as well as the football and it’s a good thing and certainly interests me. I was just thinking, I don’t recall any articles on here about Ian Rush (although I’m sure there are) but I can remember Steve Graves writing a fascinating piece about New Brighton a number of years ago. Point being, that kind of thing appeals to me so it’s no surprise I remember and the reason why I liked this.
2 quick points, I think there will be people who live on the other side of the world who are interested in Liverpool the city as a result of their allegiance with the team. I listed to Cup of Tea earlier and found it interesting when the London cabbie said the Chelsea lads are in awe of the Liverpool / Everton fans and the way they stick together. I thought it was a strong statement and forms a piece of the jigsaw for someone who might live in Perth, Australia but supports Liverpool. It’s part of the clubs identity and would probably be of interest for them towards forming a mental image of Liverpool.
One thing I would say, TAW contributors have personalities, good or bad. Some think they’re funny, some read the game well, some are well informed etc. I enjoyed this show but then Mike and Rob were on it. They’re the perfect guests for a show like this. They’re interesting and knowledgeable on this kind of thing. I hope it works with some of the other guests who will obviously appear on here.
Brilliant that Loved it
Completely agree with Robin. Many of us are in catch-up mode when it comes to the history of LFC and the City of Liverpool, travel to Anfield and the City is at the top of our bucket list. There can’t possibly be too much information. Can’t wait for the next one!
Terrific new show, lads. Gutmann and Nevin are essential contributors on these types of topics. Can’t wait for the next one. Bravo! I’m local so really enjoyed what was discussed. Hope it appeals to those outside of the city too.
Really enjoyed the new show, made more interesting for me because for the first time in 30 years travelling up to Liverpool for the football stayed for a long weekend and spent the Saturday walking round the City.
Before the game on Sunday we went up to Formby to walk the Dog round the sand dunes , beautiful place totally unexpected but I did get the point Rob made regarding losing something of the grit and edge of the City when you travel out of the city to places like Formby. Think that is the case wherever you go.
Anyway anyone coming up for the football don’t make the same mistake I did for years, visit the city, its well worth it , and although a bit of a cliché, the people are so friendly.
Looking forward to the letter B soon.
Thanks Lads
Loved this show – great balance of football and culture
Can’t wait for the next one
Excellent stuff – exactly what makes the Anfield Wrap different from it’s rivals
Really enjoyed that, being an out of towner Scouser-phile. The key to a show like this is having a high calibre of guest with an intimate knowledge of the city and an understanding of the historical and socio-economic context of places and events. I liked the way guests were allowed to talk without being interrupted, allowing a natural flow of progression and digression onto other topics. Looking forward to the next 25 episodes.
Really enjoyed the format and the easy nature of how the conversations evolved. Great job guys looking forward to many more
Realise that I’m late to the party here but thoroughly enjoyed the show. Rob clearly well placed to discuss the Albert Dock and Mike is always brilliant. Neil has become what I can only describe as a consummate pro and Gareth is, well, just a sound lad. As a former resident of Ainsdale I found the references to the past very amusing – it’s nothing like Freshfield (north of Formby) or Birkdale in terms of wealth but Steve Highway did have a sports shop in the village for a while after his retirement and Steve McMahon had a very nice place for a while. Most of the players the lads referred to actually lived in Birkdale – Dalglish and Hansen still do but they were joined by Vension, Gillespie and others and drank quite often in the Crown in Birkdale village. Freshfiled then became the alternative to the Wirral in more recent times – Stevie G renting on me of his houses to Brendan before Jurgen moved in. Anyway, I think the range and quality of shows now on TAW is astounding – hope the lads get the recognition they deserve. YNWA
Very late to this, but this was fantastic.
