GARETH Roberts, John Gibbons and Joel Richards are joined by sports psychologist and author Damian Hughes for an Anfield Wrap with a difference.
What has Jürgen Klopp done to build a winning culture at Liverpool? What can leaders do when things go wrong?
Damian’s new book – out later this year – focuses on how winning and winning in style became engrained in the DNA at Barcelona and was fostered by Pep Guardiola. Are there any similarities with methods being employed by Klopp at Anfield? What challenges does he face? And should he be afforded time before judgements are made? All this and more in a bumper 83-minute free episode of TAW.

Brilliant stuff. Really interesting.
Could listen to that Damien all day great interview that lads
Damian is a star guest, a very welcome presence. Never imagined writing that about an old trafforder. I found it really reassuring about what Klopp is doing, which I feel sure is more than confirmation bias, as he does stick to his guns, and does ditch the loose cannons. You also sense he values the attitudes of the workers in the squad. If Damian is right, and he sounds it, we have a living breathing example of the type of manager who succeeds.
Thanks lads, really enjoyable listern to a very interesting guest, have a much better understanding and more admiration for Guardiola than before.
One of my all-time favorite podcasts! So much information, so much inspiration. More books for that stack by my bed.
Well done TAW, top , top podcast. Thoroughly enjoyed that and it will be interesting to see how Klopp’s tenure works out, as well as MCFC progress under Guardiola. I do wonder if Damian has view on Klopp’s final year at Dortmund? Hopefully if Klopp had learnt anything from it, then it will be to LFC’s advantage.
Fucksake lads, has there been a more insightful and informative footy podcast before this? I haven’t heard one anyway. This has got to be kept and made compulsory listening for every Red fan. Some of the more ‘loony’ and vociferous elements of our fanbase should be rounded up and locked in a room to be force fed this recording until they understand what it takes to change to a truly winning culture. What tickles my fancy about it is he implies not just that we are on course; but also that the mancs, Moronio and Ibrahamovitch are on a different ‘path’.
FSG made numerous mistakes early on, mistakes that would have dragged us well away from our rich Scouse and footy heritages. They are now waking up to the richness and strength of our culture. The appointment of Klopp has put us on a path that they may not have appreciated back then but on that path we are now and they, (FSG), need to be made aware of the door they have now opened – that is, if they’re not aware already.
This fuckin model should become part of our DNA now, with this we would never have seen those two Texan-Toss-Pots nor suffered the shame of that squelchy-voiced fucker pissing on our chips with his insane ramblings and cretinous purchases. Thanks boys, this site is well worth the money!
I think FSG have been looking for someone to run the football side of things ever since they arrived but were let down by the appointments they made. Klopp not only has the CV but the belief in a way of doing things and running things that are about building.
They just didn’t get that before Klopp which is why he’s got a 6 year deal. They trust in his work.
Great podcast. It’s all pretty obvious stuff really thats similar to what I was taught many years ago.
It really does beg the question, why the fuck did we buy Balotelli? Surely the club know the importance of players buying in and being positive. I was seething when we signed him, and even more angry when so many dick head supporters thought it was a good signing. He was such a bad fit in every way. The same goes for Benteke. What the fuck were they thinking? How is it that I can see these things straight away but people who are paid millions to make these decisions get it wrong so badly? Baffling.
Absolutely fascinating and brilliant. Thanks to all involved.
One of the best podcasts I have ever heard, if indeed Klopp is following this process it only bodes well for us and quite honestly explains a lot about things that happen and why we as supporters sometimes scratch our heads when things happen.
Great work guys loved it.
Absolutely the best podcast I’ve ever heard, and will be listening to it again. Damian is an excellent speaker too. well done boyz.
Just read the comments …. looking forward to the podcast !!!
This is easily one of the best podcasts I have ever listened to, and believe me I listen to few LFC centric podcasts on a daily basis during my commute to/from work. I see 2 logical next steps:
1. TAW to arrange an interview with Jurgen to determine how closely his worldview matches to what we heard from Damian. An opportunity also for Jurgen to directly talk to one of the grassroots representatives of our fan base
2. TAW to mobilise our fans to take the longterm view of what we are trying to acheive and continue to believe/trust in Jurgen’s methods
Amazing podcast!!
‘The’ Liverpool Football Club. Would’ve been boss that.
Wow. What a brilliant insight into the less obvious behind the scenes running of a football team.
Lads, when his book comes out, can you let us know plse?
Cheers.
PS be good to get him back on when we’re further along our journey.
That was great. Gonna listen again later. Really liked the bit towards the end where the guy detailed the 5 methods of running “a business”, very happy to see where we now are within that model. Really really interesting and helps to explain a lot.
thanks guys amazing
