Gareth Roberts hosts Mike Nevin, Neil Atkinson, Paul Cope and Paul Senior as they go through the four categories and react to the listeners votes.
To give it away would spoil it but there was loads of intense discussion and good fun had as you would expect…
Haven’t listened yet but I commend the Bluetones reference! :)
NO, NO, NO!!! Ambassadorial Yes, but one of the problems we’ve had over the years is being Too Romantic and Nostalgic. Klopp has got rid of a lot of that, (there is always ‘Romance’, but the right, productive kind). Also, Stevie at CB better than Lucas? I don’t believe that. Lucas has his faults but he has a much better defensive mind/ game intelligence than Stevie. Remember, 14/15 when teams would single out Gerrard whilst playing deep? I’ve never seen Lucas be targeted and overwhelmed, well, not to the same degree whilst playing deep. Maybe next season bring Stevie in to work under and shadow Pep Ljinders or Alex Inglethorpe while he studies for his badges? If it’s any kind of coaching role it must be low key. We don’t want the first teamers referring to him as ‘Skipper’ (as you see in Emre’s snapchat) around Melwood whilst we have a new young Captain just beginning to really establish himself. It would smack of the old, and very sad, Shanks and Paisley story when it became a little embarrassing for Bob while Bill visited training. I Love Stevie by the way, like all true Reds.
Ps- I’ve got Four words for you……..Jean-MIchel (Bloody) Ferri!!!!
Think I remember Andy Heaton saying once he was brought by Houllier to spy on the dressing room?
neilcaff, I heard, or read, that too somewhere. It might have been in ‘Carra’ or one of Brian Reade or Simon’s books. He must’ve been good for something because he was atrocious on the pitch. I actually remember when he arrived doing a bit of research on him and hoping he could be our answer to United’s Ince or Keane. Wow, was I wrong on that one! :)
Guys, No mention of Ronnie Barker in ‘Porridge’? Brilliantly written, full of great characters and real pathos. 30 Rock is very clever but also, along with many hipster shows, very disposable. Cannot believe Porridge doesn’t get a mention. Royle family, actually follows that English tradition of The Likely lads and Porridge in its’ focus on likeable, roguish ‘real’ people. Friends? decent shout but, like many US TV shows, just too many episodes where the quality dips. Green room? Yes, very funny but again, a hipster shout from Atko’. It has zero pathos and is funny in a wonderfully cynical way – Yes Fawlty Towers has cynical moments, but they are within the psyche of a man constantly, and hilariously, on the edge of a nervous breakdown. It HAS to be about character on the page, otherwise you don’t care about the protagonist(s). This, for me, is why Porridge is the best (plus, I’m from the south but I lived in Workington for a few years and there is a great line about its’ ‘Bright lights’ (Fletcher to Godper I think), which definitely struck a chord I imagine, with anyone who’s been there.
So Ajax have Van Der Sar as their marketing manager. It shouldn’t mean that we should consider Steven Gerrard in the same role for us. Footballers are good at the job on the pitch. Let’s leave the off field jobs to people with a proven pedigree in that area.
Gerrard is a romantic notion….when Steve G was not offered a new contract…I for one understood that…considering at the time Brendon was the manager, who paled into insignificance in comparison and was unable to move the club forward with a legend still on the field…
So for me the reason was right at the time…in the past arguably the greatest and most charismatic managers was shunned by the club he loved and equally was loved back by the fans…but it paved the way for the most successful period in the history of Liverpool FC…. fast forward to present day….romance is often fraught with heartbreak and sacrifice for Love….
So for the Love of Liverpool FC …Steve G to return…no, not for for me…
Not yet anyway
