EMRE Can claims that James Milner has “surprised a lot of people” with how well he has settled into his new position at left-back.

The Reds vice-captain has been winning a lot of plaudits for his performances, in what has been a problem position at the club for a while, and his teammates seem to be recognising his good form.

Can insists, while the transition from midfield is something he himself is familiar with, it is not an easy move to make but Milner has rose to the challenge.

He told Liverpoolfc.com: “It has surprised a lot of people, because it’s not easy to play at left-back from midfield.

“But Millie did it very well and I think he has scored more goals than last year in this time. He’s a very important player for us.

“He has to keep going like that and the team has to keep going like that.”

The former England international has already scored four goals this campaign, just one less than his total in the league last season, all of which have come from the penalty spot.

Can has been impressed with Milner’s penalty taking in particular, calling him the best taker he has played with.

“I’m young, but I haven’t seen in any of my teams so far such a good penalty taker. In training, every ball is in the net. He’s a very, very good penalty taker.”

The 22-year-old has struggled to secure a place in the first team so far this campaign but with potential injuries to both Adam Lallana and Gini Wijnaldum he will be hoping that he can force his way into Jürgen Klopp’s plans for the visit of Manchester United on Monday night.
