The Gutter descends into the depths of tabloid transfer tittle-tattle and website waffle. It can be murky down here, but we look to give you our assessment of what might be the flaming torch of truth in the darkness – and what could just be flaming nonsense.
Rob Gutmann was joined by Glenn Price, John Gibbons and Josh Sexton for the latest instalment of this summer’s Gutter’ to talk about Liverpool’s potential options at left-back and just how much the Reds need to strengthen in that area.

We need to discard this Moreno character he’s worse than inexperienced, indeed it would be folly to still label him as such at the age of 24. Personally I hate the sight of him as imo he’s a coward of a player who shows no fighting instinct and constantly abondons his post, consequently exposing his position and Team mates.
Let’s have it straight here he clearly does not enjoy the art of defending when compared with Clyne who views the role as 50/50 in terms of defensive and attacking importance. Come to think of it, what does Moreno actually bring to the party, as when in an advanced position he also lacks they composure which is missing in his defensive game, as he showed yet again when conceding the penalty on Sunday.
What is a conundrum is the way Klopp has bombed both Flanno and Smith in favour of this dudd. I’m really worried why Klopp is sticking by him showing misplaced loyalty. I really don’t know what’s going on there! Can anyone shine any light on this coz I just don’t get it. I think for what I’ve seen of Cresswell he would be perfect for the role and dare I say, could even be the missing link, the final piece…… What cost for Cresswell?
Cresswell is injured long term, as mentioned on the podcast.
Relax.. Relax lads…I agree with a lot of John’s points above and never liked AM at LB for 2 yrs now. Forget the Europa Final- look through LFC conceded goals over the past 2 years and again and again he’s the main culprit- the Anfield epic vs Dorrmund- he cost us 2 goals in the 1st half as any half-brain team knows to attack though our left. Unfortunately when we win or draw v Ars in Jan or lose v City Norwich everyone forgot his faults until Europa Final. But he’s a damn good Winger and could be an excellent Wing back. He’s a bomber and a linker and a fabulous crosser at 90 degree angles who can get to the corner flag so the team can advance into the box for a cross as good as a corner kick. 30 yards out and further on- he’s as good as Clyne- and Clyne is brilliant. But Clyne has the intelligence to know when to backtrack before he’s exposed his area. AM hasn’t the cop yet.
Jurgen knows all this and more. He was right not to go for an untried and obviously not sufficiently impressive Chidwell at that price or even for what Klopp and co want from a flying LB. most others are flat footed going forward or in the ‘Big Clubs (sic)’. Milner, Gomez and when closing out a game, Klaven, will fulfill the job until JK feels this new boy signed last week is ready and he’ll probably hold AM for Wing duty. The new boy- despair not my friends- he’s not half bad at all. Young?.. so is Gomez the same age. He’s coming from a quality training Academy and he’s got good game. Michael Beale (u23 LFC coach) has stalked him awhile now and compare’s him to Zabaleta of City. I know it’s only You Tube ‘good lights’ but he’s got touch, pass, drive and can tackle on the backtrack. Plus- he seems smart. Plus he puts his head in for ball clearances. Klopp’s not buying for the future- he buys great unknowns for the now. I think Beale may have this guy ready by month-end for Klopp and co to begin ‘benching’ him also for the big games. Here’s a You Tube taster of our new (unheralded) LB:

Would other clubs serious about challenging for the title persist with a leftback for 2 seasons who has proven defensively problematic?
The lads 24 now, no kid anymore, and yet shows very little defensive instincts.
I understand when yous say that maybe Klopps asking him to break immediately we turn the ball over in the defence and perhaps that why he gets caught out of position.
Does the manager also ask him to ball watch, or fly into rash challenges in the box or play the ball straight to the opposition or pass it straight out.
I could go on, you get my point.
I don’t get the vitriol, the lad is clearly trying his best, he’s just not a left back. A failed winger yes but not a leftback.
I’m not one for casting players off really early and splurging money but surely to god we could do with an actual reliable leftback at the club and not a right sided midfielder shoe horned in.
I find it bizarre that we are not, at the very least, bringing in a real leftback to compete with him. Perhaps he can learn off him.
The whole situation I find massively frustrating and akin to the decision to bring in Balotelli to replace Suarez.
Hi Michael, I agree with your take on him completely but let’s not forget most of the anguish about him is only occurring now after the so-called ‘experts’ highlighted it in the Europa Final when it should’ve been as loud 6 months earlier (BR was right- we know it). Where was the clamour then? I always thought he was weak but that Spurs goal 2 years back and the odd decent LB performance overshadowed his constant ‘walkabouts’, inability to tackle without fouling, one foot only, constant carding, exposing us to silly goals as you know etc. Brad Smith was better, Gomez was better, Clyne on the left was better- but still he got the spot… perplexing and frustrating!?!? But his days are numbered there. Juanma Garcia may be the type Klopp&co can mould into what they want. There are very few flying Full Backs available and maybe we’ve just got to make one ourselves- sooner the better we all say. Milner and then Gomez when fit should deputise in the meanwhile (unless JK has a rabbit to pull from the hat in the next 2 weeks). JK&co know his shortcomings but they see other things that even we don’t- they’re smart guys. They feel the pain multiplied by 10 of his incompetence undoing the team’s other great work. They’ll fix it- but are biding time or circumstances. I reckon he’s finished there as Skyrtel finished himself at Southampton. Keep him for wing duty- he’s good at that plus he gives it all like the rest of the boys.
