On Saturday night we were delighted to be asked by The Florence Institute in Liverpool 8 to host a night with John Barnes. Before the event, John kindly gave us 15 minutes or so of his time to talk about Liverpool past and present.
We started with a focus on the 89/90 season, something of a forgotten year for Liverpool, when The Reds won the league for the 18th time and Barnes won Player of the Year.
As always with John though, the conversation went in many interesting ways, including the difference between formations and systems, what constitutes The Liverpool Way, the importance of a team ethic in success and how too much focus on managers can let players off the hook.
It’s a fascinating listen. Please also check out the series of articles, including a written interview with Barnes, on our website.
Fantastic listening to Barnes as a red born after the golden years. Some really good points he brought up about supporter culture and players being almost absolved of blame for poor performances. Not difficult working out why Liverpool were such a dominant force when you listen to the mindset brought to the game by one of the greats. Great week again you blokes
