NEIL ATKINSON was joined by Dan Vincent, John Gibbons and Jonathan Northcroft for a rather deflated free podcast after Liverpool contrived to throwaway a two-goal lead against Southampton.
The group chat about why they think Liverpool collapsed so badly in the space of 45 minutes having seemingly built up an insurmountable lead against an initially lacklustre Southampton side who they’d swatted aside so comprehensively months earlier.
Was it as simple as fatigue or did Liverpool switch off thinking the game was won? And what battles did they lose on and off the pitch having been in such a strong position?
We should not get rid of HENDO I totally agree we do play better with him on the pitch
Jordan seems to be Klopps man too as even when coming back from injury he starts the games
I really can’t see Klopp bringing in 8-9 new players in the summer
A few moves will be better
We already have Matip and Grujic
I believe joe Alan may choose to leave I personally hope not but he may want to
Hando and Can for me are great in midfield the club should not get rid of their better players
So guys I really don’t think we we gonna bring in so many players in the summer
I would just like to see a keeper Ter Stegan
Marco Reus , Matio Gotze
And these signings to Matip and Grujic and that should be it
I’m with Jonathan 100% on Toto in the morning – its been my Alarm music of choice for a while. Never listen to them at any other time.
We don’t need someone who is built like a professional wrestler up front playing the style of football that we do. You can be a successful 9 and not be 6’4″. Torres at his best was combative enough to win and hold up the ball as well as winning headers on goal. Where I think we do need some physicality is at fullback. A number of times this season teams have looked to just float balls to the back post and have had some success doing it. It’s a hard cross to stop coming in because it’s not passed from the byline but 10 metres over half way. The size of our fullbacks, in conjunction with a keeper who won’t leave his line means that an area on the pitch that shouldn’t be dangerous becomes a problem.
I don’t take any joy in suggesting long term servants or new signings should be booted but there is a couple of glaring players right now. I could see both Skrtel and Lucas joining Rafa at Newcastle. Like the guys said, Benteke is paid too much to be a 4th pick striker (+ he doesn’t fit our style). I reckon Moreno might get shipped out (lack of footballing IQ) as well. Hendo might go but I hope that he doesn’t. I think that you’d be ripping out some of the heart of this team. At top form he’s good enough and adds professionalism and leadership to the squad. I don’t want to see another 7-8 signings either. You’ve got to stop and build at some time.
Anyway thanks for a great show after a seriously shite result.
We need a competent striker to score goals consistently and a keeper to compete with Mignolet.
We do not have world class centre backs but in Lovren, Sakho, Matip and Kolo ( I do hope that his contract will be extended), those two positions are good enough for the time being. We also have Gomez and Ilori to think about. Skrtel has been a good servant but his consistency level has dropped significantly over the past two seasons.
As for the rest, I believe that Joe Allen has done enough to convince JK to retain him for another couple of years. For me, Skrtel, Benteke and Moreno are surpluses. If we are really pursuing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, then Ibe will also be a surplus.
That said, I do not expect Liverpool to sign more than two players this summer.
More JN please: great radio/podcast voice and knows his stuff.
I never got the Hendo hate, he’s always given of his best and is a good, hardworking player who improves those around him. But let’s not delude ourselves: there are better CM’s out there. He has very little composure in front of goal.
Skrtel Skrtel he will hurt you
In fact he makes me cry
Dont like his hair do
And his defending is so a rye
Thinks he’s hard coz from Eastern Europe
but he’s not the warrior type
In truth soft like maple syrup
His handbag dogs couldn’t maim with a bite
A constant thorn in defence of the realm
Nonsensical decisions time again
I miss when Agger and Carra where at the helm
From making mistakes he cannot refrain
Enough of this buffoonery I’ve had my fill
If I was a Jeffrey Dhamer
Martin Skrtel would be top of people I wanted to kill
Mancs vanquished, puffed out my chest like rooster in a barn
When Martin came off the bench
Now I’m contemplating self harm
Nostrils filled with his performance stench
Razor blade dragged across my wrist
Not down or up, just a cry for help
Under Jurgen Reds he hasn’t been missed
Yet he’s back in the shirt, there goes my mental health
