A NEW TAW Player show taking a look at the last seven games with Sean Rogers and Rob Gutmann. The three discuss Liverpool’s weaknesses at set pieces and the trends that are developing across Klopp’s time at Liverpool.
Patience could be a key word both now and going forward.
Great, loved it. More Rogers. And Rob and his dichotomies. Although neither of Mignolet’s “two clear goalkeeping errors” were errors imho.
If you’re interested in the analytics side of the game and how that has impacted on the world of scouting, read Michael Calvin’s book ‘The Nowhere Men’. It’s superb, a great insight into the job and includes discussion with Dave Fallows, Mel Johnson and also has some interesting background to Comoli’s departure.
We could have signed Jack Butland, you know, but he was unfortunately a but shite the night Johnson went to watch him.
Interesting discussion, good mix of “own eyes” and “statistical”/analytics analysis.
On how we’re going to (most reliably) get our goals:
I detected a reversion to our pre-Klopp “don’t know what to do once I’m in the 18-yard box” pattern vs CPFC. If that doesn’t get nipped in the bud, it can be corrosive. I’m a big fan of Rafa Benitez’s approach in solving that: drill, drill, drill and have the potential ‘targets’ or goal-scorers have specific positions and patterns, with the passers having two or three main options.
Whatever we do, let’s make sure we’re not using Lallana in the box for anything other than a quick one-two.
Good show, and cheers for the shout out.
Rather than focusing on possession, it looks like out final third passes will be high under Klopp – as you said in the show, get it to the front end quickly, but then slow it down.
Klopp has had 3 league games with 154-or-more accurate final third passes out of his four, yet Rodgers only had 12/122. A definite shift.
I’ve since realised the final third stat is wrong, bugger. We did have 154 against Palace though, so has still happened when it was rare for Rodgers.
