NEIL ATKINSON was joined by regulars Sean Rogers and Paul cope to dissect Jürgen Klopp’s first game in charge of Liverpool.
What changes were subtle, which ones can you implement immediately and are there elements that are going to take more time?
It’s the Tuesday Review, but on a Monday. AGAIN.
Great show as always lads, except was it just me or did you actually not talk about Can and Milner despite threatening to all show? And then moved onto Origi saying you’d done enough on them! Did I miss it?!
Haha, I thought the same, Tom.
There was a comment made on Neil’s piece on the match review (Spurs-Liverpool) (few from end) from a German fan that this “mad pressing approach” began to be found out (in Germany) with teams parking the bus and countering and was partly cause of downfall in last season.
Hope this does not prove correct, time will tell what strategies will be used.
Great show (again). Love the Tuesday Review.
I wanted to mention something last week after the discussion about game intelligence and then the subsequent ‘Well Read’ post that referenced Ronald Reng’s ‘A Life Too Short’…
When the book first came out, Reng was on a 5Live program talking about the book and his research into depression amongst elite sportsmen and women. During the show he mentioned one fact that knocked me sideways. Apparently, the professional German footballer has, on average, a higher educational achievement than the average non-footballer German. Just think about that for a minute: the average German footballer has more O/A level equivalents than the non-footballer. I thought that was incredible when I heard it. Reng was making this point precisely because it is so exceptional. Now, I know you cannot measure game intelligence in exam passes alone, but having coached myself I know it doesn’t hurt for the players you are coaching to be smart, in the sense that they are willing and able to process instructions, adapt in real-time and make clear and correct decisions under pressure. Again, we all know plenty of players who can do all those things and probably never got an ‘A’ in their lives, but all things being equal it has to help if your players are not as thick as pig shit.
I can’t help but wonder if German footballing success isn’t in some way linked to this fact? As a coach, if you’re looking to instill/cultivate game intelligence, starting with players who are already intelligent has to be an advantage.
Apparently this geggenpressing was hard to maintain over a season due to the extra work load put in the players in the Bundesliga. In the Prem season, with more games, no winter break and a higher quality of opposition will it be even harder to maintain?
finishes around the 41 minute mark but keeps running to 58 minutes.
I assume there is a hidden track like they used to do on cd’s though i’m hoping its not like the Stone Roses hidden track on Second Coming where all the TAW contributors are banging on violins, pianos and mandolins!!!
