Are we seeing progress?

I feel depressed after that
Panic over, Captain Mainwaring! We drew against a mid-table division 4 side and beat a relegation spot Villa.
Just give the manager the “tools”, like Barca’s entire squad and he’ll secure a finish above Southampton and Everton! I’ve also got you these sausages, here, sir.
Furious after the match and still furious 4 days later, not because Brendan is still manager but because in 45 mins Sturridge shows what a boss striker does, scores two could have had four and did not play well because he is only 60% fit. Which then begs the fundamental question what the fuck has this club being doing since the end of 13/14.
Over the past 25 years Liverpool have had golden opportunities to push on win the league, and then dominate and with 3 different owners and managers when it has come to buy new players to push on it has all turned to dog shit. 13/14 we were on the crest of a wave all we had to do was keep Suarez or buy replacements and we did neither and it is negligence of highest order from FSG value agenda to the arrogance of the transfer committee and manager.
There was a good chance that Suarez would leave at the end of 13/14 but when he signed his contract he should have been told that Liverpool wanted Cavani to join him in the summer and if he did want to go to Barca then Liverpool wanted Cavani and Sanchez as replacements, but that type of conversation and ambition was nonexistent or people did not have the balls to follow it through.
You can argue which strikers you want but to me they were the best fit, unsettled and keen to move and that Cavani was going to spend the world cup with Suarez provided plenty of tapping up time. Had two strikers like that been signed then sterling would have signed a contract at the same time (if he had been offered it )and then Liverpool would have a load of goals boxed off for years and it also means that Borini is sold for £14 million and Lambert is not bought nor Balotelli nor Origi or Markovich maybe Lallana is not bought and you can keep Agger and not bother with Lovren and those players have cost £110 Million ++ wages and Cavani and Sanchez would cost £80-£90 Million and the wages may even be less.
For Rodgers all he has to do is bed in two new strikers to replace Suarez, and the defense does not matter that much because you are playing in the opposition half and scoring loads of goals. You can buy some defenders and midfielders but as Lucas proved on Saturday, he is a good midfielder in the same way Agger is an OK defender, or put it another way he may make as many mistakes as Lovren but he is not going to cost an extra 20 Million, because Brendan could put the best defenders in the world in front of Mingolet and they are going to concede goals so just accept it, or buy another goalie and manager. You also avoid the Gerrard problem because all Stevie has to do is make some boss passes to forwards with loads of movement, then score the free kicks and penalties when they are fouled. Its what he did in 13/14 and you would expect him to do the same.
Regarding the manager this is the most baffling thing I have ever seen, you have a strength, setting up teams that can blast away the best teams in the world with devastating attacking football. Something that the fans love and something every world class striker is looking for. This gets completely binned and we go and try and scratch a 0-0. Why? Seriously Why? If you win you get 3 points if you draw 0-0 you get 1 point, and Brendan you cannot set up a defense. Is your Ego so large that you want to prove to the world you are the next Mourinho, (the worlds most unloved manager for his shit on a stick football) instead of being known as the best young attacking coach and if you continue you would be on the Barca hit list (because Barca can’t defend either but don’t care)
What Saturday has shown is that Brendans Liverpool can only score goals when Sturridge is on the pitch and for the past 3 transfer windows the club have refused to believe this in a pursuit of value and ego. I would have thought having Sturridge Sanchez Cavani and Sterling last year would have got us a CL Place (You would also expect to get out of the CL group) even with Sturridge missing the whole season. This to me would have been a much better way of consolidating, and because you have a boss forward line you can bring in better defenders or midfielders, you don’t need Benteke (another 32 Million saved). You don’t have to fuck around with formations because you have got too many square pegs in round holes because you don’t need to buy these players in the first place.
What Saturday showed was two quality strikers would have been better than 15 squad players and 95% of Liverpool fans could have probably told Brendan and FSG that and that is why supporting Liverpool is so frustrating (I imagine Arsenal fans feel the same)
This show gets better every week for me. Sean Rogers’ knowledge of the game and of the squad is phenomenal and every Liverpool fan should be listening to him and this show every week.
Yep, agreed. Compulsory listening.
Could he have picked a strong team against Carlisle not only to win the game but also as a bit of a practice match to work on a few things for the weekend?
Also, I don’t reckon all those young guys (Origi, Ibe, Rossiter, etc…) are going to be pissed to be left out against Carlisle. Disappointed maybe but they are going to get games in the next couple of months and I am pretty sure they will know that.
Love listening to this show every week.
Not a big fans of the 3 at the back either. It was neither planned for nor bought for. The only reason we’re using it is because the centrebacks used in the 4 at the back had been so poor. No idea why we nev used a different centreback partnership before ditching the 4 at the back.
In the 3-4-1-2 we’re actually playing with at least 7 players who are not very likely to score; and we’re playing this formation at home against League 2 opposition and against relegation candidates. It’s simply bizarre.
I don’t feel particularly strongly either way on the 3 versus 4 at the back thing, but if we’re going to do the three then Gomez should be one of the three. I was pretty surprised to hear Can once again being touted by some of the TAW guys as a possible one in a three on the basis of okay performances against the mighty forward lines of Norwich and Carlisle. Have we forgotten last season? Can in a back three against a team with half-decent forwards will find himself targeted again and again. Play him in the three against Everton at the weekend and Lukaku won’t move from his side. There’s a reason for that. Whether it’s a 3, 4 or a bleedin’ 5, let’s get back to filling the defensive positions with, um, defenders. Gomez is naturally right-sided and has experience as a C-B (his preferred position), gives good height and has excellent recovery pace. Whether by accident or design, I actually do think we have the personnel to play with a back three, but that personnel emphatically does not include Can.
