What’s great about Taw is the variety of opinion, as opposed to the ‘mainstream’ press who tend to operate in bullying packs weaving unreliable narratives. The worst features on here involve that lot (apart from Tony Barrett, Steve Graves, Simon Hughes and David Downie who are great), but then that’s just my opinion. Something for everyone here within the same context.
I don’t want Gerrard or Carra as a manager until they have won things at other clubs, you go out and find the best manager you can. It’s not like when Kenny took over in 85 all the infrastructure was in place. Easy media driven story but not good for LFC. Gerrard needs to realize that he is only a player and should have done his talking on the pitch. Neil is spot on what is the point and value of this book, the only reason I can think of is Gerrard thought he was going to spend 6 months as a coach and then get the main job and is miffed that this was not proposed
If I’m honest, I think Fergie’s new book sounds far more interesting.
Really good podcast guys. Great to hear the contrast in opinions and some really thought provoking points. Personally Im ambivalent about whether he should have published it but he does seem to come across as more than a bit self-obsessed. Also I distinctly recall him saying at the time that Alonso leaving was no one’s fault and there was nothing Rafa could have done about it. I also recall him saying he was ‘desperate’ for Barry to come to the club before the season started. Now it’s all his fault and he was ‘stupid’ for letting it happen. I know that public utterances and private thoughts can be different but such diametrically contrasting opinions leaves me scratching my head a bit. Don’t know which of what he says I can trust and not trust.
I’ve decided this was a terrific piece of performance art. It was an amazing critique of, well, I haven’t decided what yet (the media, I guess), but it had to be a critique of something.
I particularly liked making this the most punk rock (screw money!) and least punk rock (don’t say anything that might upset someone!) opinions ever. Great stuff.
I am glad there is at least one more person who listened to that who thought it was, at least on the part of some of the participants, a piece of “performance art”.
Was Guttman cast as the token ‘loyal opposition’ character or something?
Repeatedly, he sabotaged the conversation, wouldn’t let the other participants finish their thoughts, complete their syllogisms, etc. Much like Gerrard himself, his entire performance was marked by massive, and basic, logical inconsistency.
Anyway, my own two cents: the main explanation for what Gerrard has said, via his ghost-writer, is that, notwithstanding his outstanding, legend, status (well-earned) as a player, Steven Gerrard is an insecure and immature person. Anything and everything he judges and evaluates is centered on himself. Sorry, _not_ Liverpool Football Club.
If he was ONLY going to remain a player, he couldn’t accept not starting if he was willing and able. On the other hand, if he got to live out his little fantasy of learning the trade of being a manager by doing an apprenticeship at Liverpool, and with the senior-level squad no less, he’d be OK with a ‘squad’ player status and a pay-cut. But, being a legend of the club as a player, he didn’t think it appropriate to broach the subject himself with management. They were all supposed to intuit that this would be what Stevie wanted and offered it to him.
What he said about Hodgson similarly demonstrates that he evaluates people, managers, etc based on HOW GOOD they were/are TO HIM. If he thinks Hodgson is a good manager for England, he has zero talent for coaching/managing, and his opinion should be comprehensively ignored. But he does not. He just enjoyed how Hodgson dealt with him, how he used him on the pitch, etc.
His comments re Benitez are just beneath contempt. Childish does not begin to describe them.
Awesome comment.
Absolute LOL. Performance art. Nobody was cast as anything.
He’s acted like a self-serving twat. Why don’t you just say it?
Because it’s Stevie G. It’s difficult for people to accept their heroes may in fact be self absorbed twats, which is a trait that made them so able on the pitch. Non-Liverpool fans have said for years Gerrard (Stevie Me) was a dickhead, the same as Kenny was – listening to Paul Walsh you can tell why.
Unfortunately the vast majority of our fans are no better or worse than the vast majority of fans at other clubs. You won’t catch many United fans admitting that Alex Ferguson is, in fact, a prick. You won’t get many Chelsea fans admitting that John Terry is, in fact, a wanker. They have their heroes, a lot of our fans have theirs.
The accomplishments of Gerrard (or Dalglish/Ferguson/Terry) on the field should have no bearing on analysing his behaviour off it. If Neil Ruddock or Paul Ince or Vegard Heggem wrote this book, the conversation would be incredibly different – there would be no pulling of punches among supporters; they’d call Gerrard’s behaviour and what it tells you about his persona for exactly what it is.
Or El-Hadj Diouf! :-)
Brilliant show.
The timing of the book would have been well sorted to coincide with the Man utd game .As for Brendan its his own fault , his buys his team his tactics . For me its when rather than if he gets the sack. Good call Klopp for the Munich job and would Ancelotti want to inherit this sqaud .
Heres a question for you .
Would FSG give Steven Gerrard the managers job with
Gerard Houllier as his mentor ?
If you think Brendan has a penchant for embarrassing quotes, Klopp can top him. “Everything has an end, apart from a sausage”.
Or should I be praising him to the skies for solving the problem of starvation worldwide with this sausage that lasts forever that he has invented?
