IN PART ONE of our two part interview with Roy Evans, Neil Atkinson and Mike Nevin speak to Roy and his son Stephen about the years up to him becoming Liverpool manager.
Roy talks about moving up the ranks at the club and exactly how that backroom staff worked, before moving into the 1980s and finally Roy’s view of Graeme Souness’s tenure as Liverpool manager.
That’s a great show lads. As with the Parry show it’s really great hearing things from the inside. Roy just comes across as a solid, honest bloke who was prepared to do whatever task the club put in front of him. The side he built, for all its faults, was one of the most attacking in the last 20 years and really should have won more. I could be totally wrong, but though John Smith said that one day Roy would be our manager, I seem to remember there was some quote from one of the greats (maybe Paisley or Shankly) that Roy would be a first class coach but maybe not as a manager.. dunno, could be making that up! What a guy though and what a servant of the club. Imagine the weight of thinking that you have to be this generation’s Shankly, Paisley or Fagan and actually knowing how they would have done it.. huge weight that. Great listen. Looking forward to part II …
