ROB GUTMANN was joined for this week’s Unwrapped by Neil Atkinson, John Gibbons and Jay McKenna as they carry out a pseudo managerial review.
Was mitigation a factor, what do Liverpool need to fix, can the status quo remain and move on together?

Brendan should take Neil to Boston with him!
Great idea lads good fun
Sorry, didn’t really work for me, the pseudo manager bit, appreciate the different approach and agreed with everything raised. As above, just send Neil to Boston or at least a transcript of this to Rodgers with strict instruction not to deviate from it.
Enjoyed this, especially because Neil’s responses were so well thought out.
Would have been good to hear him answer a question regarding his suitability over Klopp or any of the other managers being linked.
I’d like to think there’s another version of the podcast where he responds to every question with one word: goals.
Very presumptuous this.
Top 15 Goalscorers in Europe’s Top 5 Leagues, 2014-15:
Ronaldo (48), Messi 43), Lacazette (27), Aguero (26), Griezmann (22), Neymar (22), Gignac (21), Kane (21), Toni (21), Bacca (20), Tevez, (20), Costa (20), Icardi (20), Meier (19), Ibrahimovic (19).
Not too far behind are Cavani (18), Lewandowski (17), Higuain (16) and Aubameyang (16). Berahino scored 14 league goals, Benteke scored 13 (in 26 league apps).
Christian Benteke could be a very good signing for LFC, but it’s been discussed before on here — BrendaNeil is ultimately doomed if this club doesn’t commit to securing the caliber of player seen above, (and ideally the ones who are really really fast.
FSG need to do their job, invest in talent and actually get around to replacing Luis Suarez after selling him on for a massive fee. I’ve seen them literally do it dozens of times for the Boston Red Sox, so they have no excuse in my book at this point. If they don’t do that, we’re not coming close to the title next season and almost certainly facing a fight for 4th as is.
I see a bunch of world-class footballers above. Ronaldo, Messi, Aguero and Neymar are unattainable. A bunch of them are either too old, too slow and/or wouldn’t bother coming anyway. But if Liverpool don’t look at a couple of those names, see players who can fundamentally alter the nature of this football team and then actually make an effort to securing their services, then Neil’s right — these people are simply letting Liverpool Football Club down.
How often do 3 quality managers become available all at the same time and, if reports are to be believed, are all interested in taking the Liverpool job?
We may no longer be in a position to attract the top playing talent but seemingly we can still attract top managerial talent. It would be madness not to employ one of these. Their name, knowledge and standing in the game alone would attract a better calibre of player.
Great thought process to come up with this angle fellas, hope the real Brendan is taking notes.
I wouldn’t disagree with anything Neil said but I think Neil Rob John and Jay would have to be in the room in Boston to put forward those poignant questions as I’m afraid the FSG crew just don’t get it and I’d swear they’ll just be covering everything commercial & finance and they’ll fuck the footy right off and the message will be clear, keep up the good work but we need CL qualification for the £12m and to fool the fans into thinking we’re ambitious and we want to be mixing it with the big cheeses in Europe
oh God The Anfield Wrap have jumped the shark..
the idea of this show just seemed so rediculous, but what it was in actual fact was a serious, well put together piece, with both Rob and Neil both doing a good job and not decending into farce… tho Neil could have easily just kept saying, “buy more goals” to every question.
well in to everyone involved.. the shows are a joy to listen to.
cant wait for Guttman in the Gutter during the sumer break
Isn’t Bendan doomed anyway?
The signings last summer were poor. It’s going to be impossible to bring in the personel required this summer to finish top 4. It won’t happen. Therefore he’s sacked next summer anyway, so might as well give next manager a years head start?
its a catch 22 situation.. if say Klopp wants six months out of the game, as has been reported, then keep Rodgers to Jan Knowing full well he’ll be replaced.. but what happens if he gets off to a flyer? or he knows hes going in Jan and does a half arsed job.. but if we’re not keeping Rodgers then would Klopp really want Danny Ings or Benteke? surely he’d want his first signings to be his players not the previous managers or committees?
ive no idea how this will all pan out.. but theres a few big managers (successful ones at that) with out jobs.. it would be criminal if FSG hasnt at least equired about them?!?
I don’t understand the Klopp love in at TAW either. Why are we on board with the FSG philosophy? Why do we think Klopp suits Liverpool? Does one title in 8 years at the same club in the German league mean you’re an instant fit for a club that currently requires huge experience that includes winning The Premier League, Champs League and would attract some of Europes elite?
Only one manager around that is currently out of work who fits Liverpool. I also think Ancelotti could become an Anfield hero.
Sorry, two.
“Does one title in 8 years at the same club in the German league mean you’re an instant fit for a club that currently requires huge experience that includes winning The Premier League, Champs League and would attract some of Europes elite?”
If you want to offer up a criticism, and be taken seriously, then get your facts right. Its 2 titles in 7 years actually. But its a lot more than that isn’t it?
Its taken a team who was relegation threatened the year before he took over, and finishing 6th, then improving to 5th, then improving again to not only winning a title but defending it the following season. Then finally being overtaken by the financial monster that is Bayern. But he still finished 2nd in the following two campaigns.
These results alone speak volumes, but to consider that during this time he also won the German Cup, got beat in the final of it last season (by Munich), the quarter final the year before (by Munich) and is in the final this season (having beaten Munich in the semi final) is impressive. He’s also won three Super Cups out of three, all against Munich, so he’s pretty handy in big one off games against bigger clubs.
Oh, you aren’t impressed? Lets look at Europe shall we?
12/13 – beat Ajax, City and Madrid to top the group, then Shakhtar, Malaga, Madrid again en route to the final. Was minutes from taking a treble winning Munich to extra time.
Last season – came top of group which included arsenal and Napoli (who had a manager of their own who knew what he was doing in Europe). Lost to eventual champions Real Madrid in knockout stage.
This season – going through the worst injury crisis Dortmund had ever seen he still qualified from his Champions League group which included Arsenal, topping it. Got beat by finalists and who knows, maybe eventual winners Juve in knockout stage.
Still not happy that Klopp is justifiably the top 2/3 sought after managers in world football? Consider he achieved all of the above while having his best players sold every summer, be they Sahin to Madrid, Kagawa to United, or Goetze and Lewandowski to Munich.
And you say we require huge experience. Did Rodgers have huge experience when he got the job? One season in the Premier League? Zero experience in Europe? Maybe that’s why he failed. Klopp has league winning experience. Title defending experience. Champions League experience. Experience of winning against all odds. Experience of knowing what to do tactically.
It’s only the ignorant and the uneducated who doubt his achievements.
I corrected it before the insults.
Nope, still not convinced.
Fantastic post that is mate and i agree with every word. Clop in my opinion is an opportunity we simply cannot pass up. He has openly admitted his huge admiration for our club and we have very similar methods and ethics as his beloved Dortmund. I would prefer Klopp even over Ancelotti and that says ALOT about how good he could be for us.
Sorry i clearly meant Klopp haha!
